Default Calling all the Jersey Folks

Well my Daughter likes Duke & I'm ready to go in less then 2 years.
I can sell up here for 500k (no mortgage) & save 12k a year in property tax.
Did I mention all 3 of my kids are in private school...so tag on another 10+K a year.
Looking to buy around $375,000.
I have family in Columbus, Raleigh & New Bern already.
The only thing I'm going to miss is the Friends & Food.

My questions to all my Jersey friends are..
How much did you save yearly?...Car insurance, private schools, Taxes.
Happy with the schools?
How much did you spend on a home & what do you pay tax wise?

Work wise...I'm in the printing business & I don't care if I need to work at wallmart for cash.

See ya soon.

My girls were not in school when we moved out of NJ, so I can't compare those expenses, or compare schools.

NJ taxes were $2000 in 2001. Today they would be about $6000, based on what our former neighbors tell us. We currently pay $900 a year for a house that we purchased for $170K (3br, 2.5 ba, half an acre).

Our car insurance is about half the price.

The pay in NC is definitely less than you find in NJ, but in all I would estimate that expenses are about a third of what they are in NJ.

hi guys!
ok so we moved down last year:

auto ins--nj= 3000 nc=1000
prop taxes--nj=4000 nc=1400
school i cant help with cause my son is only 2
we bought a brand new home for 160k --3b2b, .17 acr. as opposed to the 50 yr old house we had back home.
the food is not as easily found as in NJ, but little by little we have found our favorites. nothing compares to home, but we are happy.

I agree on the food thing. when you are new to an area, you might think it has no good food, but once you are there a while, you will find your favorites.

Wink Jersey to Greensboro

Our taxes in NJ (for a home built in the 50's) were 13,000.
Our taxes in NC (for a 4BDR, 4Bath home built in 2004) 4500. Home price 424,000.
Car insurance is cut in half
Our kids are away at college, but my niece attends private school here in Greensboro at 18,000 a year. Although I know many of the public schools here are good.
Food seems to be just as expensive here as in Jersey. I still commute up north once a month on business and believe me I can't wait to come back home to NC. I love NC and would never move back to NJ. Even though it was my home for 50 years and have very fond memories, I'm glad we decided to make the move. Good luck to you!!

I can not help with the cost of living elsewhere as I, like you, live in New Jersey. I felt compelled to note that I am glad your daughter likes Duke and not North Carolina.
I love Duke basketball. Beside being a great mortgage program, I went to college with Coach K.
