You'll spend a lot more in gas living in Pinehurst. The traffic on and off post is busy a PT time and going home time but it is not gridlocked. I commuted everyday for four years from Hope Mills though Ft. Bragg to Pope AFB before I retired and started selling real estate.

I grew up in Fayetteville, and have spent alot of time in the Southern Pines/Pinehurst/ Aberdeen area in the past. While it is quaint and has a lot of country appeal coupled with golf/horses/OK shopping(for 70 yr olds), I feel that your best bet would be Fayetteville. I go back about twice a month and I feel that Fayetteville is really starting to come into it's own. Alot of people (especially military families) seem to "head for the hills", so to speak, and end up in Hoke and Moore counties. Even Lee county! Can't imagine why except that the taxes are lower and the homes I guess are cheaper. But I feel that the new apartments in Fayetteville are pretty nice and I'm sure you will find something. Good Luck!

thank you. i guess if i had young kids and was a stay-at-home mom, i might understand wanting to live in the boonies. i don't mind living in the city but i don't want to have to be running indoors the minute it starts to get dark because i'm so scared of the area either.

Sanford is within 30ish minutes of Fayetteville

I started this reply before I realized you had already found an apartment within Fayetteville back in the autumn of 2008
But, I thought I'd just say that Sanford fits the bill of the 20-30 minute commute to Ft. Bragg, especially if one starts somewhere at the southern end of Sanford such as Carolina Trace, and about another 10 minutes to downtown Fayetteville.
We have a significant population from Ft. Bragg living in Sanford for a variety of reasons, but I think lower cost of living and small town "atmosphere"(with mid-sized city resources) are significant factors making Sanford attractive.
Here is a link to some maps showing Sanford relative to the area:

Glad you found what you were looking for

I will say this and be done with it. Cause this thread looks to be closing. I don't understand when people act like Fayetteville is one big ghetto. Oh no don't live there you will be mugged, shot at stab, it's a war zone. Man please. While Fayetteville is not paradise or people's first choice to live, it is not a bad place to stay. It's plenty of areas where you can live safely and let the kids run around. Unless you had to live an hour away, living in Fayetteville, you don't have to.
I think sometimes when there is a large African american presence "other" people tend to view the whole area as a ghetto. There is no denying that Fayetteville has high crime for the population, but at the same time it's not a murder capital of the world. My family stay's in East Fayetteville. That would be across the Cape Fear river for those who don't know. A lot of low-income folks, prostitution just to name a few. I would come down here for the summer whenever I was out of school. I felt comfortable being around everyone. I played without living in fear. That is just me and how I grew up. This is for future folks who are thinking about moving to Fayetteville. Fayetteville has turned a corner and I've noticed that they are really trying to develop the city as a whole. I don't know how long it will take Fayetteville to rival cities like Winston-salem and Greensboro, but I think it's well on it's way to becoming a good location for everyone.

Reps to you, Jayman! You hit the nail on the head about Fayetteville. We have gotten some good national press recently. Being the number one city in the country last year for housing appreciation at 11% and the number one in housing affordability has helped our image I hope.
I moved back to Fayetteville after retiring from the USAF last summer and we are building a home in the Grays Creek area. I could have chosen anywhere to live but Fayetteville has a lot going for it if you get out an look.

Skibo Rd is one of the busiest streets in town, as it's one highway where most of the businesses are. I know the Wal Mart on Skibo is a high crime area where you don't want to be; I've had encounters with people wanting money or wanting to sell me hot/stolen jewelry. I've heard of others less fortunate getting mugged in the parking lot. Best suggestion is stay away from that area.
