One of the few places that have fooled there residents into thinking the area is 2.5 million. I cringe every time I hear that. Sixteen counties (7-8000 thousand square miles) doesn't make you a major area, when most of them are heavily rural and desolate. Charlotte is getting close to 1.75 million nothing less, nothing more. It's also not an area that comes to mind in the liberal category. Most long time North Carolinians on this board have been to Charlotte several times, so smoke and mirrors does not fool us.

704, Maybe we should tell our conservative Raleigh haters to go look at cartoon renderings of the future skyline they are still dreaming of having LOL!!! I can't wait until the 2010 census shows Charlotte as being 2 million msa and 2.6 million csa. Raleighites are gonna hate us even more!!! Oh well, I still like Raleigh though. It is a nice town. It reminds me of Charlotte back when I was 3 years old.

You are right though, people that don't even live here thinks they know so much about us. I just rode the train today into uptown with the wife and kid. Before we got uptown, we got off at East West Blvd station to shoot some videos of South End. We took to the area on foot and the first thing we noticed was the wonderful smell of Price's Chicken Coop. We walked north along Camden Rd. and took some shots of the retail row over by Phat Burrito and the Charlotte Post. That area has such an arsty urban vibe that it is unreal. The people in this area SCREAMS liberal urbanites. Many of them were on their skateboards. This is probably the most urban and liberal non-downtown area in North Carolina. Our non-Charlotte haters don't even have a clue do they 704?

You cringe because Charlotte is bigger and more liberal than your beloved Raleigh. Now breathe...

^^ Looks like you will be keeping your conservative Mayor in Charlotte now that he lost the race for governor.

I actually like Pat, but he certainly does not equate to a liberal politician. I'm sure if the people of charlotte as a whole were liberal he would not be your mayor.

Go to wikipedia.com and compare the populations between Metro Charlotte and Metro Raleigh....Metro Charlotte has almost 855,000 more people than Raleigh...and do you think that Metro Raleigh only consist of a few counties....lets compare apples to apples. BOTH Metro areas consist of many counties.

There is a huge rivalry...has been that way for many years...and will most likely remain that way...it is what it is.

2,491,588 - Metro Charlotte - 19th largest city in the US
1,635,974 - Metro Raleigh --- 48th largest city in the US

I didn't realize this thread was about population. I thought we were talking about liberal cities. What does wikipedia have to say about that?

Seven counties vs sixteen. You do the math. 3000+ sq miles vs 8000+ sq miles. You do the math. Check out the 2000 census before the MSA definitions were changed. There were roughly 200,000 more people in the Charlotte metro.

Back to the topic. Charlotte is more liberal. Ashville and Durham are close seconds. Raleigh is not even in the top 10. Let's agree to disagree and just move on. Raleigh's metro has been artificially inflated by Durham's proximity for years now. This is why the census split Raleigh/Durham. This is also why Charlotte is twice the city of Raleigh. If you wish to discuss Charlotte vs. Raleigh, there are plenty of threads on citydata about that topic. This is not one of them.
