Fayetteville.....
Okay, a police recruiter on another site has been talking to me about making a trip down there and possibly applying to their department. Problem is I have never been to the area, and know NOTHING about the city....
How is the weather there? Cost of living? People? Hard to meet people if you are from out of state and single? Crime, Housing etc etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated, and if you know anything about their police department please add as well! Thank you.

Here is the best site to find out about Fayetteville. Fayetteville Wants YOU
Lots of folks will chime in with negative views of the town but take it with a grain of salt. It is a military town. The police dept pays pretty good. You will get a good amount of action too. Cost of living is not high. Houses are well priced.

Okay, well you must be referring to the recruiter on Officer.com, he is really convincing. I having been going to Fayetteville ever summer since I was 9. I lived there for like 6 months and I was off into the military. First off ask your self what is important to you. Are there jobs available? Does the city have a decent nightlife. How are the people. What is the cost of living like.
My take on Fayetteville is this. If your coming from a big city the crime in Fayetteville won't faze you. However Fayetteville tends to have high crime for a city it's size. I however have always felt safe in Fayetteville, just use common sense. Also houses are cheap. Seeing as though your shooting for the police, you might want to see if they offer a discount on an apartment so you can save for a house or condo. As far as nightlife. It always seem non-existent to me. But I always had fun hanging around my relatives. Seems like half the city is related to me in some way. Anyway I can't accurately give you a good discription of the nightlife. I hear that they are having things downtown.
Education. You got some decent options in Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fayetteville State University. All in all Fayetteville is a decent town to live. It gets it's fair share of negative opinions. It's a military town and I dont' really think they do enough to capitalize on that fact. Meaning provide more activities for families and singles alike. I believe it is a place I can raise my kids in and feel good about that.
Growing up I thought the place was boring. But you have to keep an open mind towards the city and ask yourself what are looking for. Despite the critics of the city, Fayetteville does have something to offer you. Hopefully this helps.

Hi Jayman,
Thank you for your view on Fayetteville, I read al these negative comments and really didn't know if it s a good idea to move over there anymore..after reading your view it made some more sense in a way, it sounds honest, something i can relate to and it really helped also because i am from a city in europe with almost 600.000 inhabitants and never been to the US , so I just was doing some research cause I have noooo idea where I am going to live one day.
So thank you again .

It's a military town and since the base is SO HUGE (and growing), take whatever trashy elements are in regular military towns (pawn shops, strip clubs, shady used car lots, tattoo parlors, sleazy bars) and multiply it times the quantity 3.
Add to that the type of people that frequent these type of places and you can see why, in a nutshell, Fayetteville is considered "scummy" to the majority of people in North Carolina.
Personally, I think it's a shame as the personnel in our Armed Forces deserve better.

Angelican no problem.
You know on this forum, I find that people don't give a fair and accurate assessment of a place. Sometimes we might think the place is terrible because it's boring or we had one bad experience and all of a sudden it's a dump. It's perfectly fine to say this place isn't for me. I was like that about Dover, DE. But it might be a great place for other individuals.
When people ask the common question "how is this city" then it is our job to give a fair view on the city. I just don't want people thinking that Fayetteville is a complete dump because it isn't. Heck you could probably go to Detroit and fall in love with the city while other people are steadily telling you things like "if you want to live then skip this place". Be fair and understand that people really put a lot of weight into what your saying. I've come to this board for your expert opinion because obviously I have no idea about this location. Some life altering moves are either going to live or die as a result of your words. As a result I could miss out on being apart of a great community or I can be spared from making a bad decision.

I think you are right, at first I was shocked but then I like rewinded everything and discussed it with my friends here over in Europe, it was really bothering me, you know it s allready going to be a whole change for me and I got scared off the idea moving over to Fayetteville but they also told me try to get a fair view about this. The thing is that I haven't talked to my fiance about it yet, who is living there,First because sometimes we can't be in touch for weeks cause of his work and second I am afraid he might think that I have second thoughts about relocating or not being able to adjust.
So I really appreciate your view.

One of the most pleasing aspects of Fayetteville and its surrounding county is that people are from everywhere. ARound the country and around the world. I moved here from the north and I wasn't moving into an insulated community - it wasn't 'foreign'.
Also, as my kids have gotten older - the community does a great job offering activities for school age kids. They are tweens now 9 and 11 and tons of things to do. That's been a nice, unexpected suprirse.
The one aspect I cant' speak to is the nightlife. When I moved her 14 years ago and was a kidless 20-something; my husband and I did find fun stuff to do, but we were never into the club scene. So it was different for us. We'd go play pool or bowl or hang out at a local bar - but never clubbing.
I'm not military and moved here by choice, by the way. My husband was offered a job with the county government.
