Default 100 Counties.

Is there a reason why we have 100 counties in NC? Why that magic number?

Not that I'm aware of. It hasn't always been 100 counties, that's just where they ended up.

Reading the settling of the early settlers of this state is fascinating at one time there was larger counties but later split in other counties. For instance Lincoln County use to be a part of Catawba.

Rowan county use to be huge territory.
Eastern part use to extend what is now Guidford and Orange counties.
Northwestern is now what is Surry.
Western part became Burke
Later a portion of the western section became Iredell
Eastern part became Davidson
then finally the portion that use to be about South Yadkin River became Davie.

I guess 100 counties is another reason that makes NC perfect.
