DANG!!

WEST MILFORD, N.J. - A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice.

Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.

"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions.

Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.

After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.

Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods.

"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said.

Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

he's a "yankee" cat, complete with attitude!

Okay, just couldn't resist & only saying that in jest, not to offend.

That is some cat. I wonder if he was crossed with a Tiger or some other member of the cat family. I am glad to see he is alright.

Yes, I'm afraid we do have bears, but I wouldn't say they are a problem for residents. According to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website we have approx 11,000. They are concentrated in the mountains & on the coast, with the higher pop being on the coast.

Well, luckydog, how did you and "Alberto" make out? No damage here. It rained a lot but not all at one time. I went to Kerr Drugs and bought a black and white battery operated television with a radio in it for get this, $14.95. I figured it would come in handy in some other places as well. It has cigarette ligher adapter as well. I so got one of those Weather Channel portable weather radios that has a hand crack on it to recharge your cell phone with while the power is out. And it has headset capability as well. It was about $25.00. Considering it was put out by the Weather Channel I thought that was a really good deal. I hope you made out alright.
