Me again,
We do have our hearts set on the Calabash or Shallotte area.
Second choice is the outskirts of Smithfield Selma area.
Good?
Bad?
or
Ugly?

I know nothing about Charlotte, but I wouldn't move to Johnston County where Smithfield is unless I got into the very western part of the county near Clayton. Get just as far out of Clayton as you can and still be in Johnston County and you will only be about 15 miles from Raleigh and slightly less difference from Smithfield where you can take advantage of the outlet stores in Selma. Be aware that when I lived there from 1985-1992, the DWI rate was one of the highest in the state. The drug traffic was pretty bad particularly in downtown Smithfield as well. But the housing costs are pretty good from what I hear. Once out of the city limits, the area is rural off of Hwy 95. You are just getting near the piedmont area in this area of the state. Like any place it has it good and its bad. Like I said the DWI rate unnerved me because I am terrified of being hit by a drunk driver. And hwy 95 was a revelation to me as well since I come from a one stop light town, the same one I live in now. Only we do have a couple more stop lights now. LOL
Maybe someone else can tell you about the other places. Good luck.

Depends upon what you like, but I wouldn't live east of Clayton. The culture of Johnston COunty gets scarier the farther east you go. I have never heard so many people express so much prejudice and bigotry as I did while in that county.

In other words, it is what some would call Redneck country the further east you get in Johnston County. And bigotry is alive and well or at least it was when I was there.

I wouldn't live in Selma. If you check http://www.city-data.com/housing/houses-Selma-North-Carolina.html it can tell you about part of the situation there. There has been a major flood of townspeople moving to the country to get away from migrants who are moving into town into rental houses. The outlet is not in Selma. Selma jurisdiction stops near DeWaynes. Johnston County has a high rate of accidents, etc. since it is the middle of the corridor north to south on I95. Therefore, drug trafficking is bad there also.

I grew up in Wayne County, used to pass through Smithfield a lot until it got bypassed. I knew some decent people from there but it's not a place I would have wanted to live. Lots of rednecks back then. I think it's improved in recent years. The main feature of the town for years was a KKK billboard, coming in on 70 West. It finally came down about 83 or 84 as I remember. As a white guy, I didn't care for it and I could only imagine how a person of color might think. Spent a little time there in 97 or 98, working on an outlet store. Some of us went various places to eat, get gas, etc. People I saw then seemed OK. I imagine most have moved on to a degree. There was the time when racism wasn't news; it was business as usual in many places.
