Default How Hard Is It To Find A Job In Nc?

HI ALL,

My hubby and I are trying to relocate back east from CA. I was born and raised in Kernersville, High Point area and moved to CA in '85 with my family.

We have 3 small children and want a greener (live in the desert currently) , more affordable, less traffic, larger home(live in 1200 sq ft home). I have read alot of the posts here and have really appreciated all the info. It has been a tremedous help.

My question is this. How difficult or easy is it for anyone to find a job out there? Hubby is trying to transfer with his company but so far its a no go. I'm not sure if maybe we're not wanted out there (being that we're from CA). He's in the retail trade(Lowe's) and I stay home with kiddos. We're trying to do as all the rest, find a better quality of life for a sahm family.

Any info, help or guidance would be nice. I'm thinking about breaking the mold and starting over, but that seems sorta scary and unwise.

thanks

Obviously you know Lowe's Corp is there. Food Lion Corp is in Salisbury, Belk Corp offices (Major Dept Store) are also located in Charlotte. Check out the Charlotte Business Journal on line as well as the Charlotte Observer, they have classifieds and career builder. We are from So Cal and we are moving to the Charlotte area.

[quote=MOVEME]HI ALL,

Think positive !! We decided to give everything up here on Long Island. We havent left yet , we close on our house here on July 5th. He gave up a good job here and had 3 interviews in NC and landed a job immediately ! For us it was a wise decision though because with 4 children, we just arent making it here anymore with the high prices on homes and high taxes. I also stay at home with my kids, I wouldnt have it any other way ! It seems as though there are many jobs out there so go ahead and BREAK THE MOLD !!

If he is already associated with Lowes, I would check out the site and see what cities had opening and apply at the ones that interest you after you check the area out and see if you want to live there. Good luck.
I just can't imagine it being that difficult. Particularly with hurricane season here. There is a lot of planning ahead with plyboard sold to board up windows and believe me there is nothing like trying to get that stuff when you are staring down the business end of a Cat.4 hurricane that is headed your way. And I know the clerks can't help it. But you would think they would hire extra help during this time and with the option of making it permanent later on.

Good luck in your move. Hope it works out. We just currently relocated from Florida and my husband got a job in his trade within the first couple weeks. Myself, on the otherhand; I have not been so lucky as to find what I am looking for yet. I did come from a retail chain in Florida, and the pay they were offering at the Lowe's here (the grocery chain, not hardware) was significantly lower than what I was making in Florida. So that was a real downer. The management was nice, and willing to take me at a much lower starting pay...so I am still looking and keeping that on the back burner for now. Good luck to you and your family!!! Keep your chin up and think positive; I am sure something will come soon.

You may be surprised when I tell you this: most companies won't hire anyone who's from out-of-state. They preferred people who are already established in their new homes, so that way they don't have to start all over again in searching for people they want to hire.

I took a test and passed my US Postal. A lady called me about the interview, but decided to wait until I moved in NC. She wanted me to call her asap once I land my foot there.

There is a similar tread about this topic somewhere.

I have found this to be true. In fact, I had an interview in the Lake Norman area about 3 weeks ago. They flew me out there, paid for everything, etc. Then they told me that they are going to take some additional time and look at local talent. (I bet this stalling tactic is so they don't have to put out $ for relocation packages) The did tell me to look them up again once we landed foot there locally. They didn't officially decline me. I thought this was so strange considering they already invested $$ to fly me out there, but I hear it's very typical. I talked to an HR person for a large company here in AZ and she confirmed that this is pretty typical. She said a lot of times, people who they offer positions to located out of state change their minds after the offer has been made and then they have to start their search all over again. It's "cold feet" syndrome, I guess.

I think we are just going to take the plunge and sell out, collect our money and head east. Rent for a while in the school district I have my heart set on for our kids, get jobs, and then search for a house to buy. It's a big risk, but sometimes, you have to take those risks and remove yourself from your comfort zone in order to see the big picture. Good Luck everyone!
