The city of Boone claims to be the Firefly Capital of the U.S.
From the National Park Service:
The annual lighting display of the synchronous firefly beetles in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in June has become so popular that Park managers have developed a plan to relieve traffic congestion that occurs during the peak activity period at the Little River Trailhead at Elkmont in Tennessee. The peak period of the mating behavior can vary each year, but normally begins around the second week in June. Male fireflies hover along mountainsides and open fields. At dusk, you notice a light blinking here and there. Then as more fireflies join in, their lights blink together in unison. By 10 p.m., whole glades and hillsides flash like massive strings of Christmas lights blinking in unison.

I adore fireflies!! I could never live in an area without them. I am a native Floridian who purchased a home in Asheville in 2005. In Florida we still have fireflies in my little town, but not anywhere in South Florida (too much development.) In Asheville they are ALL OVER THE PLACE in the summer, even at the motel on Tunnel Road where I stayed before purchasing! And my backyard (in back of the mall) was loaded last summer) Yes, this is a very magical place, those fireflies love the mountain area!

Yes, you are right too. I have called them lightin bugs as well. I really don't care what name they are...I just love em!! Being from CA, where there are no lightin bugs or fireflies it certainly is magical. As a child my family traveled accross the states and that is the one thing that I remember so well. Looking forward to being able to enjoy that again.

I just had to "say" that! This Summer while we were out looking at homes and then viewing fireworks over the 4th of July my CA family saw them for the first time. My kids were ecstatic! They were running around yelling and catching the "fireflies" when this little girl came over to them and exclaimed in the most deep southern accent "them aint fireflies thems lightnin bugs". We thought it was so funny we used that term the rest of the Summer each time we would see them we would say "them aint fireflies thems lightnin bugs"! I wonder where the division is on what they are called. Which states use the term fireflies and which use lightening bugs?
