I would have to say that Johnston County has turned into "horse country". I know that where my parents live there are 3 horse farms down their road. They've lived there for over 30 years, and the horse have just moved in, in the past 10.

Well, Greensboro is close to the center of the state, and Oak Ridge, north of GSO has a greater than fair share of "horsey" events.

Uwharrie National Forest is a huge trail riding area for horses. Email me and I can tell you about it. bakertc4@windstream.net

When you think about horses you should think about the Moore County area. There are a lot of horse farms there and also between Sanford and Carthage there are some new horse farms available.

It really depends on what kind of riding you're looking for. There is some hunter/jumper activity around Greenville, TONS around Southern Pines/Laurinburg and also Greensboro. There are lots of trail riding areas near Salisbury (Uwharrie) and the Triangle area. There are some pockets of western pleasure riders in eastern NC. Most eventing will be in the western part of the state near Tryon and the western Piedmont area.

Land is pretty wide open in eastern NC if you're only looking for 5 acres. You won't find much affordable land in the Onslow County area or around Wilmington. New Bern is getting pricey too. But there are areas outside of these towns where you can probably find land and the Duplin/Jones/Lenoir/Wayne/Craven/Pitt/Wilson county areas all have plenty of rural areas that will have affordable land.
