We (Charlotte) have a wonderful mayor (and I am a Democrat) that wants Charlotte to grow & prosper...not sit stale like Raleigh.

Raleigh is behind times. Why don't you guys have Light Rail even started yet? Charlotte's has been open for 1 year (South line) and they are working on their 2nd line (NorthEast line) and already planning their 3rd line (North line). There will be about 5 lines when finished. Will take years & millions of dollars...but at least we have started.

Raleigh is a nice smaller city...but very very conservative.
In actuality Meeker isn't the problem. He's actually pro urban. He's also responsible for the turnaround Raleigh has experienced thus far... The real problem is our city council and city manager, talk about archaic. I suspect with much certainty that he detest our city council.

Charlotte learned a long time ago it can either sit still, or become a classy city... Raleigh on the other hand tends to think, well since we're already a wonderful highly rated city, why do anything? Raleigh on the leadership level is way too conservative, when it comes to ambition. It's weird because the city itself is not culturally conservative...

Areas in Durham county (Bahama, Rougemont, parts of Chapel Hill, etc) are usually referred to by name. Why am I pointing this out? Because crime is probably equally bad within the city limits of Durham and Charlotte but Durham seems worse because the public perception of Durham doesn't include the 'burbs.
One trip to Durham and people will automatically see it's all hype. Durham is a wonderful city. The same thing can be said about Charlotte. I've never felt unsafe in either one.

That's not exactly what I was trying to get across. There are places in both Durham and Charlotte where you should feel unsafe if you value your life! My point is just that public perception of Durham seems to be based solely on the worst areas of town.

I agree. When we moved to North Raleigh years ago...all the Raleigh people bashed Durham and said stay out of Durham...you will get shot, mugged...etc. I am sure there are nice parts but the stigma of Durham has remained to me after all these years.

It's amazing how Raleigh flies under the radar when it comes to perception of crime. Raleigh probably has almost twice as many murders and robberies as Durham this year, however that will be overlooked.

Out of curiosity...do you have an approximate total of the number of murders in Raleigh....and in Durham?

Neither city has released total numbers yet, but the last time I counted at the end of the summer, Raleigh had almost twice as many in those categories. Raleigh had almost twice as many murders last year than Durham as well. Do a quick google search.

To the original poster unless you're trying to find the safest hood to move to, your chances of becoming a victim of crime are slim to none in any NC city.

That's flat out untrue. The change becoming a victim of crime in most places in NC are about the same or slightly better than anywhere else.
