Let's talk Tax Return
I am tired of paying H&R B $300+ to do our taxes. I used to use a older man in NJ who worked out of his home. He charged me $95.00 for both state and Fed.
Any recommendations on reasonable tax filers here in the triangle? Or if you have had any experience using Turbo Tax or any other do it yourself tax return software?

I use turbotax every year. No problems at all! You input your info and it figures everything out. It is well worth it. I just do the basic package and it takes care or everything.

Thanks Becky,
Will I be able to use it for my closing cost deductions since we just bought a house?

Unless you have some seriously complicated tax return, you should be able to use Turbo Tax and do it yourself. Anything more complicated than the standard wages, dividends, interest & deductibles?

I've used TaxAct and been happy with it. I have however the simplest of returns. From what I've seen most comparisons give TurboTax a slight edge, but I've always found TaxAct to be cheaper and works for me. YMMV.

I used to pay H&R Block too until last year when I went to TurboTax. I thought TurboTax did a good job of stepping you through everything. The only thing tax deductible when purchasing a house is the loan origination points so that should be fairly easy in TurboTax. In fact TurboTax will ask you if you sold/purchased a house and will step you through it.
And for the record H&R Block always did a good job, I just wanted to save a few bucks.

Thanks,
They did a good job, but, last year they socked me with a $500+ bill to do NJ, and NC taxes since we moved in the middle of the year and had W2's from both states. I used them from 2000-2004 in Nj and the bill was always over 300. Then I found the man who worked out of house and was happy the bill went down to 95. Then moved here and since I didn't know of anybody once again went ot HRB. I swore after I paid the 500+ I would never waste my money like that ever again.
I do have origination fees for the mortgage and a rate buy down fee. Is that all I can claim for the closing costs? The builder paid all these fees for us at closing, but if I remember right the attorney said even though the builder paid we can still claim it.

We love Turbo Tax. We have a complicated return with all of our investment accounts, buying and selling, capital gains and losses, and it's still a breeze.

I have TurboTax, it's very easy! You can do it yourself...it's cheaper, safer, and not hard at all. Used it for the past few years with no problem.
