Moving to NC
Hello, I am a 27 year old single female from NJ. I have lived here my whole life and am dying to get out. One of the places I was thinking of moving is to NC. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what towns would be good for me? I am a medical assistant but would like to continue my education, not sure for what though. I am more of a homebody but I do like to shop. I love animals and love baseball and football. I am looking for an area with low crime and reasonable apartment prices. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!!

Ugh! Is the job market really that bad down there? A few websites I went on said it's still doing ok in the raleigh area. Is that true?

What do you consider "reasonable apartment prices"?

Unemployment in this state right now is higher than it's been in decades - so do be realistic about your chances and don't plan to come UNTIL you have a job okay? But, I will say, being in the medical field will give you more chances than a lot of other fields!

I am an NC native, so I never looked at NC from the outside, but sooooo many people moving in seem to be focused on Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad and to a lesser extent, Wilmington and, ahem, Asheville.
Not putting these places down but there are soooo many cool little towns all over NC that offer so much.
I realize jobs drive the move to the places mentioned above, but if you are reasonably transportable, take some time and visit some smaller places. You might be very glad you did.

Hi Erins, I have a daughter about your age so I understand the need to try a new adventure. I think that you should check out Hickory, N.C. my old hometown. It is a beautiful area nestled in the foothills of N.C. and only about one hour from the mountains and about four hours to the beach. Being in the medical field is a plus since Hickory has two hospitals and many medical centers located here. To further your education, there is Catawba Valley Community College, Lenoir Rhyne Univers. and Appalachian State University in Boone. There is a minor league baseball team called the Crawdad's, and they love volunteers at the no kill Humane Society. Hickory has experienced a large loss of jobs in the past, but is slowly recovering. They have redone the downtown area and just found out about a company coming in that will hire over 900 jobs. The pay will probably not be what you are use to in N.Y. but you could check the classifieds. It would be good if you really did your homework before making a big move like this and come for a visit to see if you felt like it would be a good fit. A lot of young people I know, also like Charlotte, Raleigh and the Asheville area. Good luck
