Question Older homes: lead and asbestos

How concerned do I need to be? In MA we had to have our home deleaded and our asbestos pipes incapsulated. We have three young children.

You should have the same concern in NC as you had in Mass. No more, no less. They use and have always used the same paints wherever you go. Glidden, Ben Moore etc...

Richard's post is correct. It is the same stuff anywhere you go. As far as the lead paint - how young are your children? Are they actually going to ingest paint chips?

My youngest is 18 months. She will put anything in her mouth. We had to delead our last home because of the dust from the lead paint in the window sills was a problem. I actually like the solid construction of older homes, the charm (most of the time), and the mature landscaping. But I am worried about lead and asbestos. I read it was mostly a problem with older homes in the Northeast. This is why I ask.

Just put a lead test contingency in the contract and make sure it's the first thing they do.
