Charlotte vs. Raleigh.....
Im currently researching a move to either Charlotte or Raleigh. Why? The housing prices. It looks like a great place to raise a family. I am from NJ, but dont want to live in rentals for the rest of my life and cannot afford a house in NJ. I am looking to move somewhere where I can enjoy life and not have to stress so much about money.
I have two little girls, ages 6 and 7.
I am looking for safe areas with good schools.
Just looking for some comparisons between the two areas. Thanks so much!!!!

Probably the best comparison is one you can do for yourself. You may visit my website (under my profile) and do a Property Search to get a feel for home prices. At http://www.charmeck.org, click on "Neighborhoods" and select "2006 Quality of Life Study" for information on preferable areas. You can access Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union Co Schools from my website. You might also try visitcharlotte.com. If you need answers to specific questions feel free to pm me. Good luck.

Hi, I am also from New Jersey, thinking of moving to Carolina's. From research,Charlotte would be a great place to work. And you can live 20 minutes outside of Charlotte in many great areas, especially for your children.
Check out York county, they have many great schools and safe low crime neighborhoods.Home prices are very affordable and taxes are low...

Just in case someone is reading this and not already aware of it...York County is in South Carolina. A few of the towns/cities in York County area: Fort Mill - Tega Cay - Rock Hill - Clover (Lake Wylie) - York, etc.

Dorcas, welcome to NC Why not consider half way between the two and check out the Greensboro area? It is more affordable then the bigger cities and yet still close enough to them to find lots to do. There are many hospitals in that area so I would suggest looking for jobs in one of them, or in other medical settings. Best of luck to you!

About 90 miles or so to each. You wouldn't want to live in Greensboro and work in Charlotte or Raleigh - that would be too much driving for sure. For weekend activities it's not to far, just not something you want to drive five days a week. There are many nice places in the Greensboro area to consider living - like Kernersville. You would just do so much better on rent or home prices if you are able to stay out of the "big" cities. If you do decide to come to Charlotte, be sure to get a job before you sign a lease somewhere. In Charlotte (and I'm sure in Raleigh now too) you want to live on the side of town you are working on - otherwise you can have a huge commuting headache to deal with.

Between Charlotte and Raleigh, Greensboro is your best bet for jobs. If you wanted to situate yourself closer to the beach you should look at areas that branch off of Raleigh like Zebulon, Clayton or Fuquay-Varina all within about 2hours of the beach - someone correct me if I am wrong on that time frame
