It's rough all over the country, but who has come off the worst and the best in the state of North Carolina?
At 7.9%, Watauga County (Boone) here in the mountains currently is tied for 3rd lowest unemployment in the entire state. Orange and Durham Counties are slightly lower. Even several of the Counties bordering Watauga are 13+% (Ashe) and 15+% (Caldwell).

These numbers are from March, the latest available, where unemployment dropped in 84 of the state's 100 Counties.

Why are we so much lower? Not sure, really, except that we have a lot of seasonal employment (both summer and winter), and Appalachian State University (although they recently enacted a hiring freeze). This time of year students are leaving town so it opens up a lot of jobs when they leave. Although our rate of 7.9% is currently one of the lowest in the State, it wasn't long ago that our rate was around 3% +/-, so even our 7.9% is historically high.
