This is probably dumb, but Lenoir and Lenoir county (Greensboro: cities, counties)

Ok, now I'm totally confused. Is the city of Lenoir NOT in Lenoir county? I've looked at so many maps and I guess I assumed that Lenoir would be in Lenoir county.

No, the city of Lenoir is not in Lenoir county - it's in Catawba county. This is just one instance of cities and counties with the same name that aren't in the same part of the state

Please never assume a town and county that sound alike are in the same place. A lot of NC counties and towns were named after a historical person, so often there is duplication.
Lenoir is not in Lenoir County.
Pittsboro is not in Pitt County.
Henderson is not in Henderson County (although Hendersonville is).
Greenville is not in Greene County, nor is Greensboro.
Neither Asheville nor Asheboro are in Ashe County.
Columbia is not in Columbus County.
Graham is not in Graham County.
Cherokee is not in Cherokee County.
Washington is not in Washington County.
Beaufort is not in Beaufort County.
And probably others I haven't gotten around to.

BUT...
Durham IS in Durham County...Nashville is in Nash County...Wilson is in Wilson County...Gatesville is in Gates County...Gastonia is in Gaston County....and a few others that DO make sense.
Just don't assume all do.

Polkville (Cleveland) and Polkton (Anson) are NOT in Polk County

Columbus (Polk) is NOT in Columbus County

Mooresboro (Rutherford) and Mooresville (Iredell) are NOT in Moore County

Rutherfordton IS in Rutherford County

Lenoir Is In Caldwell County, Which Is Beside Catawba County. It Is A Very Nice Place About Thirty Minutes From The Blue Ridge Mountains. Hope I've Helped You Out.

I could go on and on about towns that you would assume by their names they would be in the county that carries the same name, but it isn't true.

Now Wilson the town is in Wilson County. Also Durham is in Durham County. Here are some that don't share that sensiblity.

Lenoir the town is not in Lenoir county. Lenoir, NC is in Caldwell County.
Asheville or Asheboro are not in Ashe County. Asheville is in Buncombe County and Asheboro is in Randolph County. Be sure to check out Asheboro's zoo.
Greenville is not in Greene County. Greenville, NC is in Pitt County.
Pittsboro is not in Pitt County. Pittsboro, NC is in Chatham County.


That will do for a start and I know there are many others.

We should also remember that Wilkesboro and N. Wilkesboro are both in Wilkes County...............

Franklin is not in Franklin county. It's in Macon County. but Franklington is in Franklin County.

The city Davidson is in Mecklenburg County not Davidson County
