Yep, I think I can deal with what nature hands me....except these CA earthquakes and wildfires. Here when we have a wildfire we're talking about miles and miles of unstoppable fire! This is just about yearly. And the earthquakes, well need I bother to even comment about those. I live 3 miles from the Northridge quake in 1994. The Sylmar quake of 1972 was 5 miles from where I live. Yep, I think if nothing else it will be a change in NC.

Me? I'm coming to NC. I'm gonna be warm. I won't see two feet of snow every time I get out of bed to go to work.
Me? I'm coming to NC. I'm gonna be warm. I won't see 20 degree weather for 10/15 straight days..........then warm up to 30 degrees.
If a hurricane, fire, tornado or whatever hits..........the good Lord will help me survive or I'll perish.
That is the way life is. At least enjoy what and where you WANT TO BE.

I'll be warm.

I prefer anything but A TORNADO I'll take a heat wave, a flood, an ice storm, a little snow a little freeze and anything but a tornado.

Oh I can't so the earthquake thing either. I have to put that in the tornado category.

I have been wondering about severe weather too. What about tornadoes in the foothills? Around Rutherford County? I am planning on getting a NOAA weather radio for tornadoes and have toyed with firming up the root cellar a bit. How common are tornadoes?

Sheen,
Went through a earthquake in Pakistan. Won't tell you when. WAY TOO MANY YEARS AGO.
Didn't like it much. Kind of makes you feel a "little" helpless.
You don't know where or what to do.
So, yeah I'll take the snow and fire etc.

Ok, I'm the one terrified of tornadoes...and sharks. Tornadoes and sharks... mainly Anyway on to the matter at hand, Chicken you should be fine in Rutherford County. I live on the southern end of the county near the SC line and we have a few watches and maybe a warning or two every year, but I can't remember a touchdown happening here in the past 18 years.
I know the weather radios are great to have, but there's nothing more annoying than being woke up 3 or 4 times a night by that blasted alarm. When we lived in middle Tenn (tornado alley!) I finally gave up on the radio and decided to take my chances with the weather. Thankfully my husband works in the aviation field so when there's unfriendly weather afoot he pulls up the radar to look for any "danger" zones for me. You should be fine without having to "shore up the root cellar"

If your NOAA All Weather/Hazards alert radio is equipped with the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) option, you can limit the automatic emergency alerts to only those issued for your specific county as opposed to surrounding counties. NOAA has special 6-digit radio codes for that purpose. Without S.A.M.E, you will be alerted to all emergency alerts within the local transmitter's reception area, which is up to 40 miles from the transmitter site depending on the terrain. The S.A.M.E. code for Rutherford County is 037161.
From 1950-1995, Rutherford County has recorded only 4 tornadoes. No deaths or injuries.
