We first opened an account in Wachovia. Then we experienced first hand why their nickname is "Walkoverya" and changed banks!!!

Another bit of advice, when you move in and open a new account some banks will hold your deposits (unless it is cash) up to 10 days before they will credit your account. That's something they SHOULD tell you upfront...but not all do.

I may just keep my money where it is - open an local account to have a local one for that reason only and do transfers electronically.

Thanks for posting this.

It would truely suck to hand them over my money for a new account while depending on paying for things with a check not knowing it could bounce.

Some companies are not set up to take credit cards (i.e. utilities) or charge a processing fee that is more excessive than I'm willing to pay.

And if I was in the final process of buying a property as soon as I got into town (on my final visit), I don't think they'd allow me to put it all on my credit card, especially if it was a cash purchase.

Interesting. I haven't run across any of those companies yet. Hopefully, they're disappearing. As far as major purchases such as land & homes, I just had my bank do a electronic funds transfer. I hate paper.
