Vehicle Tax
I purchasd a new honda accord last June in another state and moved over here in August, registered the car at DMV in October and paid around 250 bucks for all the fees...today I got a vehicle tax bill from mecklenburg county, billing another 250 bucks for the "vehicle tax", i'm really confused by the bill .
here are the questions,
1. does the DMV collect property tax, if not ,what were the first 250 bucks for?I'm really confused now...
2. what is the annual registration fees, is it some fee based on the auto value?
Thanks for replying

The ~$250 when you registered was for the tax year that started Jan 2008, you just arrived in August.
To my knowledge this is not pro-rated even if you register the vehicle on December 31.
The ~$250 bill you just received was for tax year started 2009.
You probably would have been better off to have just kept driving on out of state plates until Jan 2009.

Thanks mullman, but the county tax bill says "tax year 2008", I thought that it would be more reasonable if it says "tax year 2009" any idea of this?

I got the same thing yesterday except from Union County. I forgot to call them about it today.
The taxes for my vehicle are for 2008 and were sent to my address in Mecklenburg County. I changed my address on my Drivers License but haven't updated my vehicle registration yet.
I don't understand why we are getting charged by Union County for taxes in 2008, when we already paid them to Meck. County.

And you will get another bill in a year, and the year after that, and the year after that.

The DMV vehicle registration record address is the one that counts for the purpose of the annual motor vehicle property tax.
The state DMV notifies each county tax office of all vehicles currently registered in their specific county. The county tax office prepares and submits the individual tax bills based on those state registration records.

I forgot to call about this .
This doesn't explain to me why Union County, NC sent a 2008 vehicle tax bill to my Mecklenburg County, NC home where my vehicles are still registered (in Mecklenburg County, NC) to whom I have already paid the '08 taxes
