Hi looking for information on North Carolina. Possibly Cataret County area. My husband and I are thinking of relocating from Cape Cod. We have 2 small children. We want to be near the coast, similar to Cape Cod and in a family friendly area with good schools. Have looked into Morehead City area, but am open to recommendations. Husband is in construction so would also love to hear about the job market down there! Thanks in advance for any advice or information you can provide. Also would like to within an hour of a major airport. Thanks Again.

ILM isn't "major" but it's ok. The nearest "major" airport would probably but RDU.

Jobs vary depending on who you talk to. According to some things are on fire but according to others it's slow. I know more than a few people out of work now, most in the building trade. One thing they have said is that competition from migrant construction workers is down a bit so he might have a better chance.

Building overall, however, is down. And the NC coast is very different from the Cape Cod region. Have you really spent any time in Cartaret County? You need to spend some time there exploring b/f you decide if that is actually a compatible area for you and your family.

I haven't but have a friend in Beaufort. I think we are going to come down for a few days in February. Is there any areas you would recommend for a young family. I am a nurse so would like to be near a hospital as well. Thanks for the input..

We moved from Sandwich to NC in 1986. You are right to stay near the coast. We went first to Rocky Mount and it was a 17 year nightmare. Carteret Co. is pretty nice. I have no idea what your political or religious leanings are but in general many parts of NC are very conservative and Evangelical. This shouldn't matter but I found that in Rocky Mount the people actually wouldn't let their kids play with ours cause we were "Unitarian" and "Liberal" So you may not have that experience but I'm pretty sure you won't if you stay along the beach area.

We moved to Raleigh from Boston in 2005 and have been very happy so far. We have two small children and the area has lots to offer families. We head down to Wilmington when we are in need of being near the water - which is only 2 hours away. I don't know what part of MA you would be relocating from - but Raleigh is full of transplants that you never feel like an outsider. The same would go for Cary too.
