Is it possible to find at least a 3 bdr over 1600sf near (within 40 min) of Pope for a rent of $1100 or home price of $170K or less that is in a school district that is considered OK - safe schools, parents like the district?
We have a few options for relocation and Pope AFB is one of them. The problem is that we think we will continue to own our current house and TRY to rent it out, but need to budget for covering the mortgage entirely instead of hoping for rental income to cover some of it.
Looking on realtor.com, Cameron pops up with new, albeit cookie cutter like, homes in our price range. What is that town like? It seems to have a ton of houses in that price range. Does anyone know if there are any rentals?
When we had considered the area before, we could afford Southern Pines/Pinehurst etc... and most of the guys my husband would work with own homes out there.
Looking east of Fayetteville had not come up, simply b/c we don't know the area at all. Any clue how long a drive to get to Pope AFB (as opposed to Bragg) from the towns east of Fayetteville? From what I can see, Pope is on the west end. I have no idea where any of the gates are.
Thanks. We currently live 30-45 min outside of a large city (about 500K). Our town has maybe 5000 people in it. My husband's commute is 40-45 min and he does not mind because it puts us out here, away from work and the city. The big shopping in our area is the super Walmart and a large chain grocery store like Kroger. Everything else you have to drive into the city for, so I am used to semi-rural living and don't mind it.
Sanford, NC. It is about 10-15 mi from Pope AFB. Subdvision is Peachtree Crossing. Homes run about 150-170.
We have lived here 2 1/2 years and LOVE IT! Unfortunately, we have gotten orders for Killeen, TX so we have to move but if you have any questions-let me know.

Reason: real estate link
I lived in the Southview School district of Hope Mills and commuted to Pope for four years. It only took me 15-20 minutes going up All-American Fwy. You can find some very nice places in your price range. I think Southern Pines would be a long haul to get to Pope. Pope only has one Gate with outside access on Manchester Road. The Main Gate is inside Fort Bragg.
Check out this site for Cumberland, Hoke (Raeford), Harnett (Sanford), and Moore County (Southern Pines) schools to compare.
Thanks. I will check out the link. I really like our current school and its going to be hard leaving it. Getting some idea of what is there will help me with the discussion as to what to do (husband is contemplating options for assignments). Having to move often is hard enough and knowing something about the area helps a lot.
I hear you; we did 11 PCS moves in 24 years before I retired last year and joined my wife in Real Estate. It was never fun at the time but looking back I did enjoy living all over the world.
Have you looked into Harnett County? Lillington, Angier areas? There are a ton of homes up this way in that price range that have plenty of room. The schools here have good ratings as well.
My husband and I decided to move up this way after living in Fayetteville and Reaford, we love not seeing "Joe" every where, and also be closer to the bigger cities.
