Default thinking about a possible job in Shelby, NC

My wife and I would like to move to NC or SC. We always thought that Charlotte would be the best fit for us so we have been looking for jobs around Charlotte. I found a job in Shelby, NC that might work for us, but I've heard some bad things about Shelby and Gastonia. We are looking for the following things in a place to live:
1. Low housing costs
2. activities (Charlotte sports complex, movies, etc.)
3. no more than a 1 hour commute

If we do move to NC and take the Shelby job is there a good place between Charlotte and Shelby to live based off of the above needs?

I'm from the area. Belmont would be good. SE Gastonia is really nice as well. Both areas have nice schools, safe, great homes, a lot for families to do, and convenient to Shelby and Charlotte. PM me if you want to.
