There is a registration fee and a per year personal property tax. The PPT is based on KBB (Kelly Blue Book) value by the property tax rate in your area. In my county it's $.70 for every hundred dollars of KBB. So if you have a car worth $20,000 the tax would be $140 per year.

I'm sure someone will chime in with the registration fees shortly.

Everything you ever wanted to know from the DOT! This is actually a pretty user-friendly site:

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/moving/

Specifically, titling/registering your car in NC:

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/registrationtitling/howToRegister.html

The "big" fee when moving here is the Highway Use Tax, or HUT. Please note when you're looking at the "3% of your vehicle's value" that there is a maximum tax of $150 per vehicle.

Hope this helps!
