We also kept an account in our home state and it is a very good idea- at least until you have been here several months and have a good relationship at the NC bank.

When you are selecting a bank, ask lots of questions. Don't just go to the closest one. They vary on their cut off times for daily business, fees, even the way they process debits and credits. Trust me, it's worth it to ask the questions up front.

When we went to close our account at Wachovia- guess what?! Another fee!!! Yes, it hasn't been open a full 6 months so they want to charge us $25 just to close the account. I don't think so! I think I will keep a nice, LOW balance there until my 6 months is out and then close the account.

When I moved from Maryland to NC, I just changed my mailing address with Bank of America. Even did that online. You can't get much more painless than that.
