Statesville will be our New Home
We are moving to Statesville May 5th.
We're excited and can't wait.
It's not a busy place from what I can tell (online ... we're in PA).
I just hope it's friendly ... has good grocery stores ... a great coffee shop ... and somewhere where we can people-watch.
Our lives are simple. We don't have a lot of wants.
Gosh. I hope we made the right decision.
Anyone from Statesville? How do you like it?

Welcome to North Carolina, Teebopop! I live just outside Winston-Salem, about 25 minutes east of Statesville. While I've never lived in Statesville, I have been there many times, and I know people who live there. From all accounts it seems like a perfect small town. Just big enough that you have some decent shopping and restaurant choices, yet very much a small Southern community. Great location--only 30 minutes from either Winston or Charlotte, Lake Norman is just a few minutes away, the mountains less than an hour away, the beach about 3 1/2 hours away.
I'm sure you'll love it here!

And I hope you're either retired with a steady income stream to live off of or you have a job lined up. Unemployment is north of 10% currently in Iredell county and will have risen a bit more by May if current trends continue. NC is not the promised land...

Fortunately, we are retired. And looking forward to a more temperate climate.

Aw, thanks so much SunnyKayak. This forum was a big help over the past few months deciding where to settle. I've learned more than I thought I could about NC. Of course, learning about the snakes and bugs was something I wish I hadn't learned about!
I will keep posting even after the move. My realtor is teaching us how to say things like "grillin' " instead of barbecuing so we won't stick out like sore thumbs!

Just remember, barbecue is not a verb and barbecue is not a grill. Barbecue is meat prepared a special way that varies by region.
Welcome to N.C.

I live in Statesville/Iredell County. Did you not visit the area or spend at least a day here first before buying??

Did you visit Hickory, Boone, West Jefferson, any of the areas closer to the mountains unless you don't like mountains? Those are definitely great retirement cities.
