VACATIONING/VISITING NC in April, please help!!!!
my family and I will be taking a short trip from Queens NY, to NC in early April to visit some family and friends, and just to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days..
We would like to know about cool things to see, great places to visit (stuff for adults as well as kids),lodging and of course neighborhoods we should avoid....I dont mind driving so we actually plan on trying to take in a lot from the western moutain region to the east coast beach areas...
Overall we will probably have about 4 days total (not counting the travel time from home to NC) and the places we have to stop at for the visits, are Raleigh and Charlotte.
Thanks in advance!!!!

Four days is not a lot of time if you're trying to cover the entire state, but I'll take a stab. In the mountains, I'd consider Asheville or the Boone/Blowing Rock area. On the coast, either Wilmington and area beaches or the Outer Banks. Raleigh is about 4 hours from the Outer Banks, but only 2 (or less) from Wilmington. Of course, it will take you longer to get to Wilmington than the Outer Banks from where you are, so you'll have to figure out which works best for you. From Raleigh to Charlotte is about 2 hours, then you could leave Charlotte and be in Asheville in 2 hours, or about 2 1/2 hours to Boone/Blowing Rock. Of course, you could reverse that by going to the mountains first and working your way back to the coast. I think you'd be very happy visiting any of the areas above, and there are many other possibilities as well, especially if you had more time.
If you have more questions, please ask!

EVen though you "don't mind driving" you are biting off much more than you can chew with this kind of itenirary. Think of it this way, suppose someone told you they had 2 hours to visit and planned to go to the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Metropolitan Museum of Art - wouldn't you just laugh at them? Here's my suggestion...pick a region and go there only. Though the weather will be pleasant and warm then, the water at the beaches will still be WAY to cold for swimming, so I suggest this place in the mountains: Western North Carolina Vacation Resort - Mountain Cabin Rentals - Real Estate Scenic Wolf Mountain Resort Trust me, your kids will love it and you'll have great access to Asheville for LOTS of stuff to do Have fun!

Thanks!!!
Wanted to say thanks to "arbyunc" and "love mountains" for their suggestions on places to visit. Also for making me realize I may just be urealistic with my time frame vs. the area I want to cover.....I may just try and pull an extra day or two to cover what I want, because Ive been trying to get down to NC for 2 years now, so who knows when the heck I will have a chance to come back...

If you are coming from the New York come down I-77 on your way to Charlotte you will go right in the middle of the beautiful mountains. On your way back swing by the coast. You can see the things as you travel to your destinations

NC is a big state to cover in that much time but going 77 into Charlotte would be good. Charlotte is quite a drive from mountains or beach. Raleigh is closer to beach. If you are planning on staying at the beach, you may want to plan that around other people's trips. Some schools are on spring break the week after Easter so the hotels may be booked.
Have fun!

The drive from Charlotte to Raleigh is boring.
The drive from Raleigh to Winston-Salem is ugly and boring.
