Default Homeschooling in NC, restrictive or not?

Hi,

I just got an email about a woman who was forced by a NC judge to put her excelling home schooled children into public school, she is going through a divorce battle. The article didn't give too much detail, but stated the judge told the mother "public school will change the ideas you've put into their heads." Obviously this judge is against home schooling. I have looked into moving to either VA or NC, have ruled out Va and still strongly considering NC, but not if home schooling is that difficult.

Here in CO, support for homeschooling is huge, tons of groups, the schools welcome home schooled kids to participate in sports, theater, etc. Very different and less restrictive than OH, where we are originally from. I do not want to move to a state that is not friendly to home schooling as I home school my two children of elementary age and have for four years. CO is a great state to home school in and I thought NC was also. I do see that NC is more restrictive than here (similar to OH laws), but had no idea something like this would happen in NC. Really worries me now.

Anyone with some reliable data on home schooling in NC would be of great help! If you know of more resources regarding this article I have mentioned, please let me know. If I'm allowed to post the link to the newspaper for anyone wanting to read it, I will post it.

Thanks!
Artisan

Here are some articles about the story you mentioned.

Wake judge orders home schoolers into public classrooms

Mom will fight order against home schooling

Judge sets deadline in home schooling dispute

Quote:
An estimated 71,566 students were taught at home during the 2007-08 school year, according to figures released by the state Division of Non-Public Education. The enrollment amounts to about 4 percent of students ages 7 to 16 in North Carolina – students in that age range are required by state law to attend school. About two-thirds of the schools classified themselves as religious schools.
I don't have any first hand experience but I know there are extra-curricular activities for home schoolers. Here are some links with NC laws:

Hope that helps!

I think actually NC is usually pretty home-school friendly. I guess it depends on which county you are in.

The mother is using a science curriculum based on creationism. The father does not want them learning only this religious slant in science...he wants them exposed to the theories of evolution, etc.

I have been homeschooling in Pasquotank County for going on 5 years and have never had a problem. There are several homeschool groups in the area where the kids and parents can get together and have "social time".

There is a BIT more to that story then just that her kids were doing well in her homeschool. The mother belongs to a 'church' that is considered a cult by many and her children were being schooled with that agendga..which their father didn't want. They are his children ad well.
