Default Autism Info

My husband and I are considering making a move from California to North Carolina and are wondering if anyone can help us with some information on availability and type of quality of services that are available to children with a diagnosis of autism.....How up to date is NC in regards to autism interventions? What is the quality? Is there a lot of availability/suppliers? How cooperative and willing to help are the schools? Are there good quality public schools, or are we looking more at private for quality? etc, etc, etc.
Anyone who is in the same shoes knows pretty much the info I am looking for. Any info you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cristina

You might want to narrow down the region you are interested in, as the answer varies wildly by school system.

There is a statewide program called TEACCH which is also useful. Division TEACCH - Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren - UNC-CH

Default Autism

From our experience having an autistic grandson, there is much talk and not much real action in our Orange Co. schools. We have worked hard to give our grandson every opportunity and although there are some specialists in the area, it is up to you to seek them out and can be costly. As far as the school system, except for one or two that have been kind and understanding and made attempts to make a difference, the school system just wants to get your kid thru and out as easily on themselves as possible. We have pretty much given up on them. We've even contacted the state board and again, talk is all you get. Sorry to have to tell you this, perhaps there are others that have better experiences in other school districts. And we are in the supposed very enlightened county with UNC Chapel Hill.
