Default Possible Relocation To Hickory

My wife and I are considering a relocation to Hickory, mainly for the moderate weather. We currently live by Milwaukee,WI. I am a union pipeline welder and she is a beautician. We have a one year old son and want a place where crime is low and schools are good either public or private. I have came across a few job possibilites and talked to a realtor about homes. We are looking to live on a lake but what one is close to city amenities but still kind of in the country? Our realtor sends us stuff from all over it seems like. Are there many Catholic churches in Hickory? Plus are there any malls near by? What is the closest major airport? Are there alot of hair salons in Hickory? If anyone has any answers to these questions your help would be greatly appreciated.

Airports: Regional - Hickory Regional Major- Charlotte Douglas International (46 miles away).

Do a search for Hickory on this thread, there's a lot of information here already. You may also find some good information by reading the local Hickory paper online.
PS My wife and I are in PA, looking to retire within 3 years. We're looking at 2 cities in NC, Hickory in the west and New Bern near the coast.

Catholic Churches....One in Hickory. One in Newton. One in Lincolnton. Have only been to the Hky one and haven't been back.

There's a nice mall (Valley Hills) in Hky and tons of hair salons LOL. The Catholic religion is not prevalant here.

According to the Chicago Tribune (actually originally a Forbes story) the Hickory area is the worst place to look for a job in the nation right now.
