I grerw up in NC, lived ten years in CA and am now back in the south(ish).

Fish tacos...sigh. And real bread. Real artisan sourdough bread.
I don't miss much about CA, but I do miss the food.

leeohana: I would definately agree with the sentiments that once you leave there's no coming back to California unless your in the upper class/hit the jackbox/win a reality tv show....you get the idea.

For us stay at home mom middle class families with 3 kids its paychech to paycheck for us here. I also want a beautiful green rural (with cool shopping amentities nearby )atmosphere for my family. I had that growing up and it was a lot of fun memories. I just hope that we will do well with the sale of our home out here so that our lifestyle will be a little more open for fun.

We are currently looking at Kansas right now, I'm not sure about tornadoes tho?

Good Luck to all seeking the greener pastures of this life
I live in SoCal getting ready to move to NC, where in Kansas are you looking? I lived there for 14 years, can give you lots of inside info.

Add me to the list! Can't wait! We just returned from 5 weeks back there (several states not just NC) My husbands company is waiting for us to come. We are just trying to get our danged house sold! It was 117 here the day we returned and humidity on top of that! They say the South is bad? Compared to where we live now the weather there was heavenly! Everyone was SOOOOOO friendly and it was simply beautiful. My kids were approached several times by NC children to socialize and play and they didn't know what to do with themselves. How sad is that? My 12 year old and 8 year old are upset we are moving my 10 year old has no opinion. They only got upset once we got back home and they spent time with family and friends again. It will be hard but they loved the lakes, creeks, rivers and weather when we were back there so I am going to pray that after a year the adjustment will be over and we can move on. I am actually depressed being back here in CA!
Don't get me wrong we live in a nice area but NC was just wonderful! Keep your fingers crossed for a quick home sell!

Hi! Well, we've been up on the market for 23 days now in Elk Grove, CA and a couple of people interested but of course, nothing solid. We have a 12 yr old, and 11 yr old and an 8 year old and they don't want to leave family and friends as well but DH's job is being relocated and it's a great opportunity. I pray too that they will be able to adjust quickly.

We would also be in the position to buy a house in the 350-400 range in cash because of the equity in our house if we can sell. Our limit is 500k for a home. I am a SAHM and i'd like it to stay that way. With that budget we'd have a little more freedom financially....and we wouldn't be financially strapped. We'd also like to be able to afford to come back to CA and visit family/friends during summer vacations. That's the goal anyway.....

I moved from California too....not to NC though........you won't regret it trust me. What kind of work does your husband do? Im just interested in what kind of companies are leaving Cali. It seems to be a trend lately.
Leaving California has freed up alot of money for us. We go back to San Diego 4 times a year, sometimes more because husband travels there for business...(works from home.) Good luck on your move and I hope your house sells soon!! It's still summer time so that's a plus!

My husband works for ETrade Financial. They are closing the Rancho facility here in the Sacramento area and a handful of employees got relocation packages....Some to Virginia, NC and GA.

How nice that you get to visit so often. We hope to do the same. BTW where did you relocate to?

This is my first month in NC and so far I have no complaints. I am from the coast of southern California. I have been to at least 4 grocery stores and I noticed right away that sourdough bread wasn't on the shelves. Is it not sold here??? I realize it is originally a San Francisco bread, but I guess I just naively assumed it was sold everywhere. I don't expect to find Tri Tip meat, but I never would have thought about sourdough bread leaving my diet too!!! Aggh. I thought giving up Trader Joes, great burritos, fish tacos, and Tri Tip was bad enough. Now sourdough too?! I do have to say the BBQ is great here, so it is helping me get over my other food obsessions ; )
