Wow! these are amazing. I especially love the one from Oct 2006 overlooking the Christmas tree farm. When I was growing up, we traveled up to Harrisonberg Va in the fall and visited friends. It looked just like that picture-brought back lots of happy memories.
Can't wait to visit next week

Thank you everyone for posting those beautiful pictures. It's just want I needed this morning. It's raining and cold in New York today, and these pictures made my heart sing! I thought of God's beautiful creation, not only of nature, but of all the wonderful people out there. I can't wait to move down. And I wouldn't want to change a thing about North Carolina!! Lots of hugs to all of you. Have a blessed day!

Another long distance shot. Is that Charlotte on the horizon?!

Here's one of the Charlotte skyline from Grandfather Mountain. About 82 air miles away. The photographer was the late Hugh MacRae Morton, owner of Grandfather Mountain prior to his death in June of 2006.

I was going to use that example if someone didn't believe me. That picture provided inspiration for attempting my own.
The distances are nearly equal: 81.71 miles from the Mile-High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain to Uptown Charlotte and 80.43 miles from this vantage point in Polk County. He had 3,000'+ in elevation on me though. Next time I go for it I'm going to take a hike on Tryon Peak to get an extra 1,000'+ where there allegedly is still a fire watch tower that allows for excellent views of, well, everything!
I can't remember, but I seem to believe I read that he used a 500mm lens with a 1.4x extender (700mm), while I was only using a 75-300mm lens (at 300, obviously) with a cheap 2x extender (600mm). I also was using grainy ISO 400 film.
If I ever break down and shell out the cash for a digital SLR, I'll have the 1.6x focal length magnification on the CMOS censor versus 35mm film (I don't know why this happens, but it does). So add that to my lens and extender combo and I'll have 960mm!
And while I'm at it, Spartanburg, S.C. from 20-25± miles away (different location for this one).
