We have vacationed at the Outer Banks for many years. Hatteras Island is just beautiful. Gorgeous pics.

Thanks Barbara, Every thing I have read about the Outer banks the towns in Hatteras Island seem like something I was looking for. I admit that if someone wants familar box stores and such they are better up nags head and north but I really enjoy the mom and pop shops, restaurants offered on hatteras island and the nothing but wilderness drive gave me a good sense of going on a remote island vacation it was kinda cool.

After crossing Oregon Inlet bridge I was so tickle to see the white sand

It was so nice to see a beach with no commercial devlopment

Nothing can be finer than to be in Carolina and have the beach to yourself

I was mezmorized by the miles of sand dunes that line highway 12

I was expecting to see seagulls and of course fish but other wildlife in the area was an added bonus

The ducks above and turtles are hanging out in these canals around Avon.

This guy below was hanging out near the entrance to Cape Hatteras lighthouse

I had to go onto the Avon Pier considering by looking at it condition. I am not sure if it will be able to weather many more hurricanes. It nice that we still have a few wood made piers still left

It good to see 4wd drive SUV'S being used for their intended purpose LOL
I actually wish we had one so we could drive instead of walking to a remote spot on the beach

Yes it is Pilot Mountain or as on Andy Griffith they called it Mount Pilot.
Thank you for bringing the image code to my attention I didnt notice it lol but it has been corrected.

this is the view if you are heading up Highway 52 from Winston Salem towards Mount Airy it around 30 minutes. There is camping and a overlook at the top and if your really active you can rock climb the mountain or simply hike around the mountain.
Make sure your brakes work well however when driving up it is ia very curvy road with a 10 percent down grade.

Very nice. I'm wondering how the fall foilage will be due to the lack of rain this summer.
