I could see where a guy from up north would have a very difficult time with a "true" southern girl. I've been around them all my life, and I have a difficult enough time as it is. I know I'm generalizing in my posts, there are all types of people out there, but the southern girls that I know seem to expect you to "just know" certain obscure social things.
Yeah, it's definitely a matter of opinion. I'm around your age, and I noticed a long time ago that (men's) southern style follows a completely different path than northeastern/west coast style does.
From y'alls perspective, we just don't have any style amd we dress like old men. LOL, I see where you're coming from, that makes total sense to me. At the same time, southerners my age look down on that northeast/west coast style. It's a pretty major faux-pas to be "trendy" in the south. Its seen as an "identity crisis" of sorts to follow fashion trends, like a sign of mental weakness or something. (I'm half joking)
I don't even pretend to pay attention to women's fashion. Not even maybe. I always hear northern girls talk about how differently southern girls dress, but I'm not perceptive enough to know the difference.

Well, to begin I'm glad you didn't take offense to my post! If you do dress more trendy down south, I feel like guys think your (hate to say it and I do not agree with them but this is true) "gay". I think it is pretty retarded to make that assumption. I wouldn't even go as far to say that guys in those places actually follow fashion trends. It is not that I pay attention to women's fashion, you can just tell what looks good or flattering on someone (or whether someone looks like a 40 year old doofus or like trash lol sorry). I do think people could branch out more here in what they wear. I mean c'mon dudes, a t-shirt and a nice pair of jeans are not gonna kill you (don't the polos and khakis get old?) I guess I don't and probably won't ever understand why dressing nice or trendy down here is looked down upon, but lets face it, most HOT girls like a man who can dress well. :cool

The humidity keeps their skin so smooth and beautiful.

Very, very true. But then the same people who accuse that style of being "gay" will turn around and wear a pastel pink oxford shirt and navy blue slacks with little embroidered labrador retrievers on them. Go figure.

Well, there are trends in the south. One particular hairstyle that is extremely popular among my friends is something called "Bama bangs" or the "Tellum" (backwards mullet). I'm sure you've seen it - it's just really shaggy hair that covers the forehead. As seen here:
Not just in South Carolina (where I'm from), but you can go all the way out to Texas, and this is extremely common. One theory (hopefully a joke) is that the hair is the antithesis of the northern spiked-gel-hair look, and that's why people sport it.
Sperry's topsiders, red wing boots, carhartt pants, lacoste collared shirts, expensive polarized sunglasses, any sort of hiking clothes & shoes, linen pants, seersucker pants/shorts, etc. - there are various "trends" in the south, and they come and go. It's weird - there are "trends" that were from my grandad's generation, that my dad's generation dropped, and my generation picked back up. Our styles tend to be rooted in the outdoors - like hunting, fishing, or hiking gear. Or, they are ways to deal with warm weather, like seersucker and linen, with lighter colors. A lot of the northern trends are olive, brown, black, burgundy - a lot darker.
On an unrelated note, one of the most peculiar differences of style is the color black. Unless you're attending a funeral or formal event, it is very unorthodox for a southern guy to wear black leather shoes, a black belt, black pants, or a black shirt. It's nearly always brown. That's actually a good rule of thumb when trying to visually identify a southerner or a northerner.

See.. that's the crux of the issue. You're totally right - hot girls want a man who can dress well. However, "dress well" is totally subjective.
The hot southern girls I know all want a guy to wear pastel polo shirts, khaki pants, and all the other southern-style things I mentioned. To them, that is dressing well. Hair gel, designer t-shirts, jeans, etc. are, to them, "sloppy".

Thanks for your insight. I'm not totally bashing it, it is just that, in general, if your gonna comment about me or look at me weird because of what I am wearing I am going to say something about what you wear. I thought that was pretty funny about the pink shirt, etc. Definately true. All that crap was back when I went to high school in NC. I do not really experience any problems anymore with stuff like that.
I am Italian (dark hair, eyes, etc) so I find darker colors look better on me (especially black) and so does spiking my hair with gel LOL. I would look stupid with "Bama Bangs".
I am a mix between Urban Outfitters, Express, PacSun kind of guy. Not much into the Ralph Lauren, preppy, or "designer" shirts. The hot ones I know are also a mix - some are like you said and some, well, they like me.

In my opinion, Northern/West Coast girls dress so much better. Much more sophisticated and flattering. I'm glad my girl knows how to dress like that. I know I am generalizing, but I just find that more girls down here dress sloppy or trashy (The guys don't dress any better either. I am 21 and I can't help but laugh at all the guys around my age who dress like 40 year old golfers).

Northern girls do not dress better than Southern girls. On average, Southern women are more attentive to the way they look. Northern women would feel free to walk around in trek pants or adidas tennis shoes. Attention to dress is very important to the Southern woman. They often spend a lot of time getting their hair done and finding the right "thang to wear". When my mother lived in the north most northerners could tell she was a southern belle simply by how meticulous she was dressed. Its how all women in Richmond dressed .

Oh ok
Guess that explains why there is better shopping up there - because people (especially women) will actually buy the clothes.

But do northern women wear white gloves while they do gardening?
I rest my case.
