How would this effect her? Would he have to quit smoking in the office? The notion of "you don't have to work/eat there" is ridiculous, especially in this economy.

I was living in Florida when this type of bill passed there, and I was a smoker at the time. I was annoyed for all of a week, and then I got over it. It's not that big of a deal to smoke before/after entering the restaurant. Most of the time I was with non-smokers that preferred I didn't smoke in the restaurant anyways.

Florida also has a similar concession in regards to bars, however it's determined by the size of the kitchen. If a kitchen was over a certain size, then smoking was prohibited. I knew many bars that decided to shrink their kitchen and menu so their patrons could still smoke. They weren't thrilled, but I really don't recall too much backlash.

I understand that this state was built on tobacco, but really, a lot has changed since then in regards to how the country as a whole views smoking and the health related risks.
To clarify, the smoking ban in Florida restaurants and bars is not about the size of the kitchen, rather it's the amount of business that comes from foodservice sales that dictates whether or not it is legally obliged to be smoke free. That percentage is 10% of an establishment's total revenue. So, if a sports bar doesn't get more than 90% of its sales from alcohol, it must be smoke free.

I'll never forget the restaurant I visited in San Francisco one time.

We sat in the non smoking area which was located in an elevated area in the middle of the building with the smoking area below.

Why not ban smoking in restaurants that don't serve alcohol. Or ban children from being in restaurants that serve alcohol. That way children won't have to be around smoking or drinking.

But wouldn't that mean you couldn't take your children to eat at Applebee's, Chili's, Cheesecake Factory, or any of the BBQ restaurants? Don't most non-fast food restaurants serve alcohol?

I don't understand the argument that you don't have to work somewhere. It's not like you have a job just waiting for you if you quit (someone else mentioned the economy, don't remember their name). This is just my guess, so I may be wrong, but I get the feeling that very few places are smoke free since smoking is still allowed in North Carolina. That leaves very few options open if you want to work or dine in a smoke free environment. That being said, it would be better if everywhere just banned smoking. Why should non smokers have to limit their job search/lifestyle just to find places that are smoke free? Majority rules in a free country and the majority do not smoke.

A smoker at the next table is vastly different than a guy drinking a beer at the next table. You and your child will be completely safe from the glass of beer, as it emits no toxins or carcinogens, nor does it stink the whole place up and make your food taste bad.
