Default New Chips in Drivers licenses

It was a sad day for me today as I called the local DMV. My cousin showed me her Renewed drivers licenses yesterday, and to my surprise there on the back was a new type of hologram. However as I came to find out today thru DMV sources it's not just a hologram it infact is a new trackable chip. They said infact it was a new homeland security project for this state. The officer also said that the cards which are trackable is just the first step in the new project, she also stated that other states had their own projects but that eventually all states would infactbe merged into the same system. This news shocked me to say the least but she also added that they were infact doing facial recignitions as well to go into the database. However before answering my questions she had a couple of her own such as, why do you want to know? Have you been involved with fake ID's ect. ect. I laughted and assured her that infact I was just a concerned citizen, and that I found it irronic how we are not the terrorists but that we have to submit to being treated as such. She however didn't seem amused. What as a nation have we allowed? Well as for me my drivers licenses don't expire until 2010, and until I move to a state that doesn't have such a policy or the policy itself is recended I'll stick with the ones I have!

The Real ID Act of 2005 says that, starting around May 2008, Americans will need a federally approved ID card--a U.S. passport will also qualify--to travel on an airplane, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments or take advantage of nearly any government service. States will have to conduct checks of their citizens' identification papers, and driver's licenses likely will be reissued to comply with Homeland Security requirements.

In addition, the national ID cards must be "machine-readable," with details left up to Homeland Security, which hasn't yet released final regulations. That could end up being a magnetic strip, an enhanced bar code or radio frequency identification (RFID) chips. The RFID chip would be similiar to ones used for gasoline purchases where you just wave it at the pump instead of using a card slot.

No state is required to comply with the act.

Update: After December 31, 2009, "a Federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a state to any person unless the state is meeting the requirements" specified in the Real ID Act. States remain free to also issue non-complying licenses and IDs, so long as these have a unique design and a clear statement that they cannot be accepted for any Federal identification purpose. The federal Transportation Security Administration is responsible for security check-in at airports, so bearers of non-compliant documents would no longer be able to travel on common carrier aircraft without additional screening.

Well, I've heard of the 'Real ID Act", to be honest, as an American citizen, this encroaches on our Freedoms given to us by the Constitution. If I have to drive without a license, and cannot fly anywhere - I'm not agreeing to this if my state agrees to this.

blessings, Shen

Infringes on States Rights. Can State’s Rights Make a Comeback in Their Opposition to REAL ID? And many people thought States Rights was just a Civil War issue. Liz
