It really depends on location and the county or city school system if they do year round schooling; not all schools are under that format. It also depends on the location. For instance mountain school systems may be delayed due to snow but this was a light snow year for them and some are making it over easter. Generally it the last week in May or the first week in June.

Legislation was passed in 2004 that starting with the 2005-2006 school year, all public schools could start no earlier than August 25 and end no later than June 10. Before that, school usually started the first or second week of August and was out the last week of May. As mentioned above, there are waivers if the school district misses a certain number of days due to inclement weather, so the mountain counties start about a week or more before the rest of the state (again, it varies by district). If they don't consistently miss several days of school due to snow, the state can retract the waiver, which has been bad since it was a mild and dry winter, but the next winter might not.

As far as year-round schools, I have no idea. There are some in the Raleigh/Wake County area and probably Charlotte/Mecklenburg as well. If an answer doesn't show up in here you might want to check out one of those forums.

Default Schools in Charlotte

As of right now the Charlotte Mecklenburg schools start around Aug 25th ish and end sometime around June 8-10. Haven't heard anything that they would be changing to year round. Fort Mill SC, Rock Hill, SC also start in Aug (earlier than the Char/Meck schools) I believe the SC schools get out in May.
