Default Best area to live in NC if you have Allergies & Asthma

Hello,

My family and I recently moved to Houston. We had been researching Roanoke, VA but decided against it because we heard miserable things about allergy and Asthma problems there. I wish we knew that about Houston before we moved.

In the short 5 months that we have been here our 5 year old has developed Asthma and allergies, my husband has developed allergies, and my Asthma and allergies have been kicking and they never really bothered me too much.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me any information on what the best cities/areas in NC would be to live in if we have Asthma and allergies. How about areas with good air quality? We have to find somewhere where we will not be constantly sick. My husband has always loved NC so we thought we would try to find some information about that area.

Thanks very much!

Well, it depends on what he's allergic to. Pollen is an issue here too....I've suffered with alleriges & asthma for the last 15 years. And both my kids have asthma. But if you get on a good allergy regimen (medication/shots, etc.), you'll be ok.

Totally agree. I am allergic to not only the common things (mold, fungi, ragweed, various grasses, trees, etc - I am allergic to uncommon things such as tumbleweed, LOL)

A good regimen will stave off most attacks. But again, it depends on what you are allergic to as to how severe your problems will be.

Some of your problems in Houston could be from other particulates in the air, not just airborne spores and pollen. (just throwing that out there - may not be the case)

For me the mountains is the worst. The air is tighter due to higher elevation, allergens are crazy due to the pollen and greenery in the area.

Piedmont is ok but you will still have issues. Alot of greenery.

The coast is your best bet due to lower than the rest of the state in alergins . Plus if you can get a coastal home that is your best bet verses something like downtown Wilmington.

I would imagine the pollution is awful in a big city like Houston.

I agree with Sunny - the coast is probably your best bet in NC.

Or perhaps a northern state where it is cooler-more winter like climate than warm?

I have the fewest problems with allergies when I am at the beach in a highrise apartment. Lower apartments are more subject to the dampness and mold. North Carolina is not a good state for persons with plant allergies unless you are in an air conditioned well filtered home. We have a heat pump/central air and buy the really expensive filters at Lowe's.

Allergies are a problem until you cross the Mississippi River going West.

Sunny you are right about the mountains. I love the Blue Ridge Parkway, but my nose stops up the minute I open the car windows. I was sick a lot as a child and lived in that area. Of course, part of that sickness came from the cat that stayed inside our house to keep down mice. I am extremely allergic to cats. I am taking medicine today so I can breathe.
