Hi all,

I just wanted to recommend a great book I found about North Carolina. It's called The Newcomer's Guide to North Carolina. It's written by a native NCer/Tar Heel and tells you tons of what there is to know about the state. Things like state bird (The Cardinal) and so on. So if you're actually moving there, this is a great read!
Just thought I'd throw this out there!

I went to a particular online retailer and checked the reviews. All positive. It seems this book will save a lot of phone calls and headaches over dealing with the various agencies you have to access to get settled.

I checked out the list: "people who bought this book also recommend ..." and found another helpful tome: "Amazing North Carolina". I bet that would come in handy to impress the natives with a wider band of knowledge than they have about their home state . After all, how many natives know:

How Lizard Lick, Cat's Square, Boogertown, and Rabbit Shuffle got their names?
This book will tell you, yessiree.

Or: The Civil War battle where the Confederates fought without clothes on
(I'm not sure I want to know about that one. Nekkid Rebs ::shudder:: )

The strange story of Goat-Gland Binkley, who operated in North Carolina 75 years before Viagra
(umm, I wonder how the makers of that elixir would have responded to the warning: "if you have a <certain condition> that lasts for more than 4 hours ....")

Lastly, Senate Bean Soup, the secret of Jesse Helms' longevity (recipe included)
(I'm more anxious to know what will eventually make him go toes up. maybe a stake through the heart. I think that old codger was around to see the end of the War Between the States and probably have a vociferous disagreement with Lee over the terms of surrender)
Edited to add: I always knew he was an old gasser. Now we know why

This sounds like a book that will be interesting reading. It's certain to have an honored spot in many bathroom libraries

All facetiousness aside ..

Check the travel section of B&N. All the stores I've checked have a Local section where'll you'll find books on NC history and life. This is a very interesting place to live, aside from its attractiveness as a transplant state.
