I think you're confusing typical NY behavior/mentalty with boorish behavior LOL....the honeymoon may soon be over for northerners moving south!!

Far more northerners move below the mason dixon than the opposite. Who cares what some New Yorker thinks about the old North State. You will never find southerners planning a move to the new york burbs. Welcome to all that move here in search of a better life. Complainers need to take 95 north. We will never have the great ethnic food that you had back home. Nor would any area up north have great cue, cracklin, fish stew, hushpuppies, fried cornbread, froglegs, chitlins, hogjaw, pigtail, greens, etc. If you want to make nc like ny, expect a fight. If you like it here, expect many friends.

Come to NY, to my hood, then you will know what life is really like!" Then he left the store and most people were staring at the door in shock.
I am sure that 99% of NY ers are fine. I just have really been hit lately with some doosies.
As for fitting in, absolutely it is about attitude. I am from LA, CA and honestly, there are some days when I miss it so badly I could cry, but I try to keep it to myself and not compare....actually I don't keep it to myself, I take it out on my DH!

Wow I didn't know my brother in-law was in town
I know what you mean surprisingly I miss Phoenix so much somedays. It's part of adjusting. If I were to move back I know I would be miserable and would keep thinking about Charlotte. Funny I never missed NY ever!

HA! Yup, must have been your BIL. Honestly, if you hate NC, DON'T COME! This isn't rocket science!
My parents retired near Phoenix. It isn't my cup of tea, way too hot and not close enough to the ocean, but otherwise similar to LA.

Unfortunately for your fellow New Yorkers the ones like you give everyone a bad name.
Do yourself a favor - consider it an opportunity to grow as a human being - try to think for one minute how YOU would feel if the situation were reversed.
Try to imagine you were one whose home turf was being invading by people pooring out of the south for your cheaper prices and safer homes in the north. Try to imagine how you would feel when you do all you can to welcome folks to your little slice of heavan and all they do is slap you in the face figuratively with an arrogant, condescending attitude - constantly complaining about how they did it so much better back where they came from. Try to imagine how you would feel when they go out of their way to make fun of your local customs and your way of life and let you know, in a very loud voice, how the only reason they even grace you with their presence is for what they can get that they want for cheaper in your home town. Yeah, I know it is a radical, difficult concept, but try to put yourself in the shoes of a southerner for one minute. JUST ONE MINUTE. Then realize this is how some of us live ALL of our minutes.

Yeah I agree, I sure wish they wouldn't come here to complain.

OMG this is EXACTLY what it is like in NY, every day, every minute. Waves & Waves of people come in, from all over the world, which is really cool, but, also, sort of annoying when they complain about how dirty & crowded and expensive it is!
Of course the worst is when they bash America as a whole, which some like to do.
Did I say that was the worst? Oh, wait, no....
maybe the worst is when they say Americans are dumb (which, we sort of are, compared to some groups of people, I must admit...) and take the tech jobs & send their earnings out of the US, or shop only in their own shops...., when they will not make any effort to "Americanize" b/c they are Superior...
Before I get flamed, I am talking about Some people who come to NY and loudly diss it, not All...
so, Loves Mountains, I really understand how you feel.
What I do not understand is how a person who comes from that kind of atmosphere can come south & be like that to the people here.

Thanks NYer I should have been careful to say New York the state, as I do know NYC is the first destination of many from around the world. I was trying to get Pauly to picture his whole state being overrun.
We are so egocentric sometimes, only concerning ourselves with what we want or what is good for us. When people take the time to walk a mile in another guys shoes common respect and understanding can be gained. But what arrogance for anyone to move to a place just to improve their own life and then show little or no respect to the natives who welcome them and share it all with them. That goes for everyone, no matter where you are from and where you move to.
