Asheville vs. Greensboro (moving from Florida)
Hi everyone,
Just wanted some info on NC. I am planning on moving somewhere in the western part of the state and was wondering if someone could recommend the best place to raise a family. I have a young child and I am looking for a place that is very family oriented, has great schools, does not get a great deal of snow or ice, low crime and neighborhoods with sidewalks would be a plus. My range would likely be $175-225K. I have heard Greensboro was good as well as Asheville. I don't want to be in a large city. I am looking for a town, maybe on the outskirts (15-20 mins away from the city). I am an LPN. How are the jobs for nurses?
Thanks everyone!!!!

I live in Graham about 25 miles east of Greensboro. We don't have a lot of problems with ice and snow. There are many nice small towns around here. Gibsonville, Mebane, Whitsett-really too many to go into. Bascially when we moved here we knew we wanted a new home and started looking into different developments between Raleigh and here. It was just a lot of investigation and visiting until we found the right place for us. We are retired so schools are not an issue but our neighbors appear to be happy with the schools here in Graham.
And while we are in the middle between UNC, Duke and Wake Forest Baptist hospitals, plus other regional hospitals and clinics, my sense from friends that are nurses is that not many jobs are avaiable and when there are there are so many people applying for them. The one field I have been told is doing well is for CSA's and home healthcare aides. Perhaps other posters on here will be more familiar.
This is a large area around here and it will take some investigagtion on your part to find the right one.
Good luck.

Asheville gets a fair amount of snow and from what I've read on the Asheville forum a number of people there are not too friendly to folks from Florida. Go to the Asheville sub-forum and you will see what I mean.

Asheville is in the mountains-gonna have snow and ice there.
I say stick to the Triad area-Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point. Great hospitals in that area.
Good luck!

Coastal areas like Leland, Topsail, even Burgaw... about 15-30 minutes outside of Wilmington. VERY little ice/snow... about 3-4 smaller hospitals and LOTS of private care facilities. Affordable real estate within that range. Crime is bad in Wilmington but not so much for families as for singles/students/younger folks.... and not anything you'd need to be any more than aware of with your commute.

Thanks for the replies. I wonder why they don't like Floridians??? What about Kernersville? I'm mainly looking for really good schools, low crime and afforable housing in the suburbs.
Thanks!

Charlotte suburbs or towns just outside of would be your best bet.
