I am currently living in NY and I am certified to teach K-6. I have also begun taking Math classes in order to obtain certification to teach Math through 12th grade. In NY, since I already am a certified teacher, I don't have to enroll in a program. Instead I only need to take 30 credits of Math and 6 credits of adolescence education to become certified to teach Math.

Since learning of our future move to NC, I have been trying to find some information on becoming certified in NC. I have all the information on how to obtain a license for what I presently hold in NY, however, I cannot find any information on continuing my education to obtain certification to teach Math...

Does NC have certification programs, or will I have to enroll in a masters program for Math?

Basically what I am wondering is of you have a license to teach K-6 and you decide you want to now teach Math in middle school, what do you need to do to become licensed to do that?

Thank you for your help,

Sandy

Hello Sandy, I just graduated from a North Carolina school in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher. In order to get certified K-6 you have to pass the Praxis I and the Praxis II (313 or better). I believe that in order to teach in the middle/high school after you receive your license, you have to take the Praxis II exam for the subject that you want to teach. Then after you take and pass the test you will be Highly Qualified to teach that subject. You can go on the NC DPI website to make sure. Monique
