As a life long resident of North Carolina, and I am not a realtor but a nurse, I mistakenly thought thought that as a native that I might could help someone with an important decision in their lives. Apparently you for one don't appreciate my help. There are other natives on this boards and the other state forums that I seriously doubt are going anywhere either. So my question to you is why have you singled me out? I have made no effort to sugar coat the good and the bad of North Carolina. I have told you all about the hurricanes, the hot weather, the oppressive heat in the tobacco and cotton fields. For some unknown reason I thought that is what the vast majority of you wanted to hear. I am sorry that you will have to read yet another one of my post which I personally consider rude. Why don't you leave if you are so miserable here or have you left all ready? That being the case, why are you here?

I have nothing to defend but my state and the people who live here. I am a disabled housewife now that like I said has lived in North Carolina all my life and in Greene County for all of it but about 7 years. I have nothing to gain by talking you into staying, leaving or coming to North Carolina. I just thank God that at the moment you aren't in Greene County. You would be one miserable soul because you certainly don't understand the heart of North Carolina or the south either for that matter. Oh don't worry, if you get back to New York isn't it or have recently made it back to New York, we will never cross paths. You are right about one thing, I will never leave this place. I will more than likely die here just like the 10 generations ahead of me have. And I will be buried beside my parents and the two deceased children I have about 1/4 of a mile in the cemetery down the road. And I thank the Lord everyday for dropping me here, my "91 IQ" which I still say is up for debate, and all. Just be thankful that the Lord in his wisdom made us all different. But he did say we are to love one anothers as we love ourselves. We have quit holding people hostage so you can get out if you hate it here.

I live about 18 miles from Greenville, NC in Pitt County. What do you need to know, Dave?

Ohhhhh do I feel sorry for you...you've opened up a can of worms by answering me! :-)
We've been out there 4 times in the last three or four years. It seems wonderful. We come home, pray about it, go back out there and try to look around some of the smaller towns like Robbersonville and such but keep being pulled back in to Greenville. We actually came to look at Chocowinity on our first trip.
How about Farmville?? They had a plant close..or will close...Ford? or something similar...will that kill the town?

Is Chicod ok? We are trying to figure out if it's a seperate town or not. If it it, then why is the school listed as a Greenville school?

We just keep thinking it would be nice to move to a smaller area then ease into Greenville....ya know?
Just trying to figure out this moving thing. We don't know anyone out there yet. But we will soon.

Thanks Very Much,
Dave

Bethanytedder- I do think most people WANT to hear from natives... the good and the bad.... that's why most people come and post questions.

What good would we be to eachother if the only ones around to answer questions were the ones who were wanting to move on elsewhere?

Don't take the negative remark to heart... many are glad you're taking the time to share your opinions and experiences!

I also keep reading about the re-districting of the Greenville schools and such to try to "racially balance" Greenville so to speak. Is Greenville going through a tough time with racial issues? Is this a new or old problem?

Farmville is a nice little town just inside the Pitt County line and about 11 miles from where I live. They recently were closing Collins and Aiken but that is a textile plant. And it has been opened for many, many years and probably will throw the town for a loop. Greenville is larger and has the ECU medical school and is what you would consider a college town. The hospital is top notch as well but very easy to get around if you are from places like New York City, Washington, DC and the like. Even Raleigh is larger than Greenville and a lot more difficult to navigate. Ayden is another small Pitt County community with easy access to Hwy 11 which will take you right into either Greenville or the slightly smaller town in Lenoir County of Kinston, NC. I personally live in Greene County. Since we have no hospital in the completely rural county of Greene, we use the medical facilities in Pitt County. There is also Fountain in Pitt County. But this is barely a cross roads with a bank, a post office, and a couple of stores. By the time you leave the city limits on 258 S, you are in Edgecombe County. There is easy access to the beaches from Greenville. Some go to Kinston and hit 70 E and go in to Morehead City and others use 264E and go to what we call little Washington and head towards the Pamlico Sound region which will get you near Chocowinity and I probably have that spelled wrong. Read the book "Cruel Doubts" or watch the movie by the same name with Blythe Danner. This is about a murder that took place there by the woman's stepson. She was not killed but her second husband was. Interesting story though. This occurred in 1989 and the 3 or 4 guys involved are in prison now. James UpChurch, Chris Pritchard ( her son), Neil Henderson and seems like there was one other person involved that I can't recall his name. But this was a family thing. It was not a random act. As for Chicod, I have no knowlege of it. But the county is kinda large and I believe Bear Grass, Grimesland, Grifton, which may be either in Lenoir or Pitt County but it is right on the border of the two, Williamston, Winterville is a nice community and worthy of checking out, Bethel, and there may be a few other little communities. If I were moving to Greenville, I would check out the subdivision in the Allen Road area near the hospital or some of the areas coming off Allen Road going towards Farmville. But remember this is close to the coast. Not close enough for storm surge during a hurricane but certainly close enough for inland flooding and wind damage. Fran hit in 1996 and was the worse wind maker but Floyd of 1999 brought extensive flooding. Good luck.

Don't worry. I am too stubborn for that. But it burns me up to have to answer over and over again why if I have no intentions of moving why I am here at all. Would you rather hear from someone who has been here 54 years or 54 minutes? I think Chicod is just a school in Greenville since I have thought about it. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Pitt County is rather large. I would imagine the busing issue if there is one is due to the influx of immigrants from Mexico and other places. The students have to go to age appropriate schools.

We relocated last year and love it. I can't say that you will feel the same, but NC is beautiful. Good luck.

HollySpringsMom, what is the most appealing thing to you? The scenery, the slower pace of life, the people, the sense of community?
