\... We have done alot of research so far. Just thought if some one had some first hand info on UNC Wilmington and Eastern Carolina it would be helpful.. Again thanks to all.
Again, East Carolina and UNC-W are excellent colleges. "It will depend on her major to really know what to recommend.." I strongly urge your daughter to contact the admissions dept for information and a personalized tour. The tours are given by student ambassadors and members of the admissions staff. Oh, ECU and UNCW are about 3-4 hours apart.
As a long-time NC resident, I can give you some impressions of the schools mentioned from either visiting them myself or reports from friends whose children attended.
I'm a UNC-Chapel Hill alum (grad school), and know many people who went there for undergrad and graduate school. It's tough to get in, but once accepted the curriculum is challenging without being so difficult that it doesn't allow you time to have a life outside of academia.
UNC-W: Reputation as a MAJOR party school. Easy to get in for the most part. Great area and lots of fun.
ECU: Very good for anyone serious about pursuing studies in the medical field. Excellent medical facility to train in. For pretty much everything else, it too has a reputation as a big party school. Not much to look at as far as the campus goes.
(Please, before I'm jumped on, I'm just reporting "feedback" I've gotten on these schools from people who've attended there. As with any college regardless of reputation, you can study alot or a little, party alot or a little..)
NC State: Excellent engineering dept. and overall good school. Campus not as "pretty" as Chapel Hill, but still a pleasant, fun environment with lots of school spirit.
Davidson: Excellent, VERY intense challenging school. Difficult to get in and meant for serious students.
Elon: Challenging but nurturing environment. Not as difficult to get in as Carolina or Davidson, but not so easy either.
One not mentioned is Meredith: all girls school in the heart of Raleigh. Women from many of the old NC families have attended there and continue the tradition through the generations. (Think deb ball - not that there's anything wrong with that..)
You may also want to check out UNC-Charlotte and Greensboro. Good Luck!
We went thru this last year with my daughter and many of her friends.
The 1st thing is you are looking at a state funded university vs a private college. I do not know how much different it is for out of state students.
2nd is you are looking at 2 different size campus's which can sometimes be a factor. It was for my daughter.
I do know that UNCW is now requiring an equal or higher GPA then Chapel Hill, both are excellent with a great reputation. ECU is by far the biggest party campus a known fact, but excellent medical field college.
The strange thing is it tends to go in spells as to what UNC school has the biggest acceptance rate. 3 yrs ago hardly anyone we knew got into ECU, and many got into Appalachian. This past year everyone my daughter knows got into ECU and only 2 got into UNCW.
What my neighbor did and my daughter is now doing is starting out on a smaller campus thru the UNC system. Get acclimated to the change of being away from home as well as having smaller classrooms vs 150-200 kids per class. Keep competive grades and when they declare their major apply for a transfer. Chapel Hill is much easier to get in when you declare your major then to try as a freshman. Competition as a freshman is brutal! This is just a suggestion in case she does not get into Chapel Hill or her #1 choice.
Each campus is so different from each other. The cities they are located in are also a factor. I would suggest to visit the campus and city because it is where she could be living for the next 4 yrs.
It will depend on her major to really know what to recommend like vet school would be NC State , Med school Duke ,Dentistry Unc chapel hill. There is also western carolina univ Wake forest, uncg at greensboro, Campell univ.
and App. Lots to choose from all top notch.
UNC Chapel Hill Campus is voted one of the top schools in the country. but again, depends on what she wants to study.
UNC - Asheville is liberal arts.
