Cabin in woods near water for dogs (Murphy, Jefferson: renting, camp)

I am planning a acation so we can take our dogs. NC is close enough to us (about 12 hour drive). They are water dogs and love to be free when we camp so we need to be on a lake or creek. We need something close enough to see local attractions like local shops but close enough to do nature. If anyone can make suggestions or refer cabins that would be great.

I'd recommend renting a place in Ashe County along the New River. There are countless cabins available along the river and you'll enjoy one of the best summer climates in the country!
