Default Question regarding transportation/ownership of guns

We currently live in CA and purchased a .357 magnum a while back and went through the whole background check procedure, etc.

It is my understanding that we can transport this thing across country as long as it is (a) unloaded and in the trunk of our vehicle or (b) unloaded and on the moving truck -provided we inform the movers it is there.

My question is what happens when we get to NC? Do we have to register it, get a permit, license, etc? I've tried to read the NC gun laws and all they discuss is how to go about purchasing/selling one or how to get a conceal permit.

If anyone can help or point me in the right direction to find out, please advise.

Thank you

You do not need to re-register a legally owned handgun in NC unless you want a concealed carry permit.

As far as transportation, each state has their own regulations as to what is legal or illegal, but generally, you should be fine as long as the firearm is unloaded and inaccessible to the vehicle occupants while in the act of interstate travel.

The best way I know for you to get a Concealed Carry Permit is to find someplace locally, wherever you're going in NC (typically a firearms store) and ask them, many of them offer a class that you can fit in your schedule. I took the class many years ago in Raleigh. Once you recive your "diploma" you will go to your local Sherrif's Dept. and apply for the permit and fill out the application. Pay your fees, and then go back and pick it up in a week or 2. It's good for a couple of years (not sure exactly how long).
