Thank you for all of your suggestions! Looks like I will have some research to do today! I will definitely check out the towns mentioned and see if there might be a good fit for me.
anifani -- I live in Hutch, yeah, west of that line you were talking about! My sister lives in JoCo and I know that area is definitely not part of the KS I live in!

JoCo is a universe unto itself, LOL. At first, I thought - have I arrived in Stepford? But then I came to really appreciate the low crime, clean towns, easy access to amenities, good schools, all the new neighborhoods, etc. Just took some adjusting my mindset to the small lots in the residential areas, houses all the same types of colors . . .
Just FYI - expenses here are about the same as they were in KS, except gas is higher here. Groceries, housing, utilities - all about the same.
I miss a lot of things about the KCMO region. You sure you want to leave???
Here are the things i miss:
Nelson Atkins museum
Sandstone Theatre
the Plaza
my old neighborhood in Lenexa
Tanner's
J. C. Penney outlet!!!
Oak Park Mall
Shawnee Mission Park
the new sports complex at KCP&L
the Boats! (I like to play the slots!)
Chiefs
I also miss the big storms and looking out on a horizon that goes on "forever."
I miss the big snowfalls, too!!! Not so much fun when I had to clear my own driveway, tho!
Here you will have beautiful mountains nearby - that was what I missed most when I was living in Kansas. Love the Blue Ridge Mountains.
You can definitely find that spot you are looking for here. Finding the job will be the bigger challenge right now. But that doesn't mean it is impossible. Everyone I have known that has moved from KS to NC has been happy w/ their decision.

OK, we love folks from Kansas so you will have no trouble......UNLESS you don't get this figured out:
You go OUT west, you come BACK east. That is how it has to be. GET IT RIGHT or we will run you out.
There are a lot of towns in NC other than Charlotte, The Triangle, Triad, Wilmington and Asheville. Depending on your employment situation there are so many better options. You can focus on the Mountains, the Coast, or play it save and stay in the middle. Please do not limit your options to the abovementioned. Good Luck.

I would hope someone wouldn't limit their options, but you didn't mention where these better options are?

Well as I suppose it is for most people moving, it depends on where I could find a job and how the housing is. I do have a "large" dog and I know it's difficult to find an apartment that accepts pets (let alone larger ones) or need to check out the housing market... see if there is something decent I can afford! I won't limit myself to any certain place at the moment, but am researching several places. Would love to go roam in the mountains but definitely need the weekend on the beach.
Gotcha on the Back East and Out West.... That's how I say it! plus down south and up north.
Oh Yeah... do you have any good suggestions, LLN????

Davidson County/Lexington, NC! That's where I was raised and proud to say that I no longer live there! It is the most backward, hick place around!

Ahhhh...that makes me sad. We thought the area was lovely
We were interested in the Ledford MS/ HS areas, and liked a house on the grounds of the Willow Creek Country Club...Davidson County.
Any opinions on the Ledford schools?

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I just had a "good feeling" when we paid a visit to that area. Can you tell me more about the schools? Safe? Overcrowded?
Prwfromnc--I would still love to hear your opinion, since you are from the county
Thanks guys!
