well, downtown is pretty big w/ well over 100000 visitors over that weekend.
they have live music, food and a beer tent, crafts etc.
the restaurant Old German Schnitzel Haus has a special menu and German Live Music and is actually more authentic. Its a lot of fun, people enjoy the good food and the good beer. the restaurant has the Original Oktoberfest Beer from Munich in Germany on Draft !!

Hickory Area
I think Hickory is an awesome area to retire too. We have plenty to do at night. Fireworks are at Lenoir Rhyne or the Crawdads stadium. We also have a cruise-in on Saturday nights at Hardees (off 64-70 East - Conover). If you want something to do on weekend nights. Think about joining a club (like Kiwannis, Moose, etc...) I am a Riverside Moose Member and we have Bingo every Friday night, most Saturdays we have something happening. Plus you make lots of friends and have a place to go where you know people. We have another cheap movie theater in Newton on main street right off the square (I think it is like $3.00-$5.00 a piece now though- don't quote me on it). You can also drive approx. an hour to Shelby for drive-in movies (car load for $7.00- two first run movies, pack a cooler and take a chair or two and enjoy the shows. Downtown hickory has Octoberfest coming up. And there are other area events, check out the Chamber of Commerce and look on-line for local events. Sure to please everyone. Hudson area of Caldwell county is also very nice. Close and they are getting a new Super Walmart so sure to grow even more after that.
Good Luck!

Hudson is getting two new Superwalmart strores. One five miles to the south in Granite Falls and one five miles north in Lenoir.

You'll probably want to check out the homes in the Viewmont area...think NE Hickory. That's really the best area for "retirement", as there are more well off people there, and there is less traffic (except for Highway 127), and there's less crime, etc.
If you live in the right spots, Hickory is pretty good. You can live in a rather secluded spot if you choose, you're minutes away from the Mall (including Target, Best Buy, and god-forsaken Wallyworld), Class A minor league baseball and the airport, Hickory High School is in the Viewmont area, and Lenoir-Rhyne College is as well, so you can watch Division II college football on Saturday afternoons in the fall.
Boone is only 45 miles to the NNW (home of the 2005 Division I-AA National Champion Mountaineers). Great little town to spend a day or weekend in the spring/summer/fall (or winter if you like skiing). Charlotte is 1 hour away, in case you want to go to something big (NBA, NFL, NASCAR, concerts, museums, etc.).
Hickory is in a pretty good location between the mountains and Charlotte. Like another poster said, you might also want to consider a place outside of Hickory, but in Catawba County. You might be without city water, but you'd have quite a bit less in taxes if you own property & cars.

where do young, single people live (25 years old) if they have a job in Hickory? I'm moving from a large urban area and consider myself more of a city girl. Is the commute from Charlotte to Hickory really bad or manageable? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
