ppl from massachusetts moving to nc
i accidentally stumbled upon the massachusetts forum, and saw a thread that said "anyone moving to nc?" or something like that... anywho, the first thread was posted just a few days ago, but it already ha like 50 or so responses in which ppl were stating that they were headed your way. get ready. they invaded us in fla, now they are headed your way. most said it was b/c of warmer weather and cheaper living. they drove up the prices here in fla, so in 10 or 20 yrs, i guess they'll be headed out of nc to the next cheaper place to retire.

Mass., Mich., NY, NJ, Fla., etc, etc. Folks are moving to NC from all over.
We're not ready, IMO.

There is probably a thread like that on every state forum. Everyone is coming here. I posted in the Mass. forum.

I'd wager to say the North Dakota forum lacks such threads!

Just got back from business/pleasure trip to Asheville. Luckily I had read many posts here talking about the rapid development of the area so I wasn't as surprised as I might have been when I actually saw it firsthand. Wow! It's hard to believe that a 30-minute drive from Asheville in every direction there's evidence of growth, planned or otherwise. Quite shocking and I agree with cooperwx that many people are "not ready."
Luckily I had the chance to chat with many people who were born in Asheville and/or lived there for 30 years or more. They were mostly negative about the changes, especially since many felt they weren't in control of what was happening. They suspected, rightly or not, that developers and politicans were busy making deals, along with farmers and other big-landowners, right under their noses.
On the other hand, I met people from NJ/NYC area (I live in NJ) who were new to the area and welcomed the changes, especially bigger highways, more box stores, planned sub-divisions, etc. Ugh! They asked me if I was thinking about moving down there and told them, "not if it's going to wind up looking and feeling like NJ"! They weren't amused.
I'm not sure if the new zoning rules will help or hinder the way of life in Buncombe county, but sure do hope the local groups keep the politicians' feet to the fire. While not all growth is bad, it sure is better to plan for that growth with input from a wide range of citizens. We didn't do that in NJ and looked what happened!

One thing we have especially in Asheville is several groups who will challenge things they fell are not best for the future of the area. Local groups have fought the widening of I-240 in West Asheville for over ten years now. Civic leaders exposed the county commissioners' illegal dealings with a power company and a planned power plant was shot down AFTER getting county approval.
What we can't seem to do anything about is preventing large-scale development in areas that aren't well suited for it. Big land owners have had their land for generations. The value is high, and thus the taxes are getting higher. In many cases the landowners have lost reason to hold on, and the developers are ready and eager to buy. Nothing much can be done about private land transactions. We'll see if zoning works in preventing rampant development. The demand is sooo high...
The bigger metro areas of the state are just sprawling out into neighboring counties/towns. Places like Kernersville, Clemmons, Concord, Mooresville, Monroe, Wake Forest, Holly Springs, Clayton, etc, etc, etc are almost unrecognizable compared to just ten years ago. It's crazy...
