If I owned a business I would rather hire a citizen who was a high school dropout with a criminal record than hire an illegal alien with an associate degree!!!

Well, we could ask "how are they going to pay the tuition?" about MANY lifetime residents of the state, too. I think the answer is usually "that's their concern." It does make one wonder, when even US citizens with long work histories aren't finding work, what incentive an illegal alien would have to spend the money on college right now.
It is true, as others mention, that these and others factors will mean that, ultimately, very, very few new students will result from this policy. Those who do will be the most dedicated of the bunch, and dedicated students are always a good thing.

I am ashamed of the fact that we deny employment opportunities for our own citizens who run afoul of the law, yet openly admit illegal aliens, whom we know nothing about, just to add to the state coffers!!! So much for "homeland security"!!

What do politicians not understand about ILLEGAL. They take an oath to the Constitution which applies to americans, not illegals. if they apply, deport.

I agree. What is the incentive for a child of an illegal immigrant to succeed in public school if he or she is then prevented from achieving a higher education? Do you realize our country allows illegal children in our public schools? The drop out rate is almost 50%. They are staying in the United States after school whether you like it or not. Wouldn't you rather have an educated person trying to achieve goals instead of a repressed person who may or may not be tempted by gangs or other criminal behavior? Most of these college bound illegals are children of parents who brought them here and didn't have a choice in the matter. We all complain about illegal immigrants not bothering to learn to speak English yet we slam them for wanting to go to college. Interesting double standard. The unfortunate thing is the number of illegals who will actually attend college is probably so small this is a wasted argument. I personally applaud and support any child with high aspirations who want to break his/her cycle of poverty and gain an education.

Wouldn't it be nice if Americans could just march into foreign countries and get all these benefits. Imagine free Medical Care at Emergency Rooms using the Free Care Program. Taking all these so called minimum wage jobs, that alot of high school and college kids really should be doing. The educations they can get by enrolling in state community colleges. It must be wonderful to be able to do that. Perhaps we should all just march right into Mexico and set up housekeeping. We would see just how fast they give us any services and benefits. Really how long can this country continue to exist if it doesn't get its act together. And Fast. This baloney is going on all over the USA not just NC.
